Unpaid Care: The Underground Economy

In August 2021, when my 62-year-old mother said hello on FaceTime, she was holding the side of her jaw, grimacing. She was in anguish, but kept repeating, “I’m OK, I’m OK.” At the time, my mom was living in Bellingham, Washington, two years into providing unpaid live-in care for her father-in-law (my step-grandfather, who I reluctantly call “Grandpa,” despite not having much of a relationship with him). He was suffering from debilitating cancer and heart disease. But providing home care to him came at a price to my mom’s health, safety, financial security, and family. The job was all-consuming: She quit painting and gardening, which she loved, and she grew isolated from her own children and grandkids during the COVID-19 pandemic. My mom’s experience is not unique. She is among the roughl...

The Underground Railroad (Television Tie-in): A Magnificent Tour De Force Chronicling A Young Slave’s Adventures As She Makes A Desperate Bid For Freedom

Publisher Description Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, the #1 New York Times bestseller from Colson Whitehead, a magnificent tour de force chronicling a young slave's adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. Now an original Amazon Prime Video series directed by Barry Jenkins. Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood—where even greater pain awaits. Matters do not go as planned—Cora kills a young white boy who tries to capture her. Though they manage to ...

Attempts To Upend Viewers’ Notions Of What It Meant To Be Enslaved ‘The Underground Railroad’

Speaking on NPR’s Fresh Air, Barry Jenkins, the director of “The Underground Railroad,” noted that “before making this show … I would have said I’m the descendant of enslaved Africans.” “I think now that answer has evolved,” he continued. “I am the descendant of blacksmiths and midwives and herbalists and spiritualists.” As a scholar interested in how modern representations of enslavement shape our understanding of the past, I am struck by the ways Jenkins seeks to change the way viewers think about – and talk about – Black American history. In doing so, he takes the baton from scholars, activists and artists who have, for decades, attempted to shake up Americans’ understanding of slavery. Much of this work has centered on reimagining slaves not as objects who were acted upon, but as in...

Tattoo Business Owner Arrested for Underground Heroin Business

The owner of a tattoo business in Chandler was arrested for allegedly being connected to an illicit dark web drug business. According to the FBI, Jason Arnold conducted his legitimate business known as Damaged Ink Tattoo and Body Piercing on the ground floor of a building next to 4913 S Alma School Road and 2130 W Chandler Boulevard Road. A secret underground opening led to a room where he ran an illegitimate drug business. Arnold has, until now, maintained a clean record with his neighbouring business managers who describe him as someone kind, selfless and who is ready to help them if the need arises. Neighbouring workers reported that in April 2017, he hosted a fundraiser to cover for damages that occurred at the next-door barber shop after a shootout. This happened after a ce...
