The Black People

Black American's are American's mostly or partly of African descent. More than 28 million blacks live in the United States. They account for 12 percent of the nation's total population and make up the largest minority group. About half of all black Americans live in the Southern States. Most of the rest live in large cities in the east, Midwest, and West. Black people belong to the African geographical race. This race consists of dark-skinned peoples who live or whose ancestors lived south of the Sahara, the vast desert that stretches across northern Africa. In addition to dark brown skin, most members of this race have brown eyes, dark wooly or curly hair, and thick lips. Most black American's have used five terms to refer themselves. The term Negro (which means black in Spanish and P...

What’s Wrong With These People? Don’t They Have The App?

"Mum, I don't know why you don't just get the app on your phone," my daughter Heather, said to me, as I handed the Starbucks Barista my gold card. "Because I like human interaction much better," I said. "I don't like that they keep trying to shove more and more technology down our throats." "Suit yourself. But I'm telling you, it's so much more convenient, and you don't even have to wait in line anymore!" That conversation rang in my ears one morning as I was running late to my writing class. I'd been anticipating treating myself to a chai latte with soy for days, knowing I was coming back to my old stomping grounds in Boston. I missed the days when Heather worked at the Starbucks on Berkeley and Boylston Streets--when they would start making my drink as soon as they saw me walk thro...

They Built It And People Came

"We're trying to turn a negative into a positive," explained the happy young woman who took my drink order. I asked her if someone loved rabbits or was the cafe's name a Bible reference. Apparently, one coffee shop in Deep East Texas is willing to poke fun with residents of the Bible Belt. Thumpers Coffee and Gift Shop recently opened in the town of Nacogdoches, Texas. The spiritual hub has a few customers in the morning but it's at night that it fully comes to life. As soon as classes end at the nearby campus of SFA-Stephen F. Austin University-students converge on the storefront shop to drink coffee and study. Biblical sayings are painted on canvases throughout the property and a huge, ornate mural is displayed on the ceiling. The cork/message board displays bible studies, resources...

Will Monuments Honoring People Of Color Replace Old Statues Of Confederate Generals That Are Slowly Disappearing

With most of the legal challenges resolved after the violent Unite the Right rally, and the statue of Robert E. Lee removed from its lofty pedestal in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia, local lawmakers in December 2021 voted to do the unimaginable – donate the statue to the local Jefferson School African American Heritage Center. In turn, the nonprofit cultural group quickly announced its plan to melt down the bronze statue and use it as raw material for a new public artwork. What the group plans to build is still an open question, but it clearly will not be another statue honoring the Lost Cause of the Confederacy, the idea that slavery was a benevolent institution and the Confederate cause was just. As part of America’s reckoning with its oppressive past, Charlottesville and the rest ...

Targeted Advertising On Social Media Drives People To Extremes

Have you had the experience of looking at some product online and then seeing ads for it all over your social media feed? Far from coincidence, these instances of eerily accurate advertising provide glimpses into the behind-the-scenes mechanisms that feed an item you search for on Google, “like” on social media or come across while browsing into custom advertising on social media. Those mechanisms are increasingly being used for more nefarious purposes than aggressive advertising. The threat is in how this targeted advertising interacts with today’s extremely divisive political landscape. As a social media researcher, I see how people seeking to radicalize others use targeted advertising to readily move people to extreme views. Advertising to an audience of one Advertising is clearly powe...

Why Do Some People Like To Build People Up And Then Tear Them Down?

Even though someone can be seen as a celebrity, there would have been a time when no one knew who they were. That is unless their parents were already famous, and this would have given them the upper hand. In The Beginning Therefore, if one doesn't have famous parents, for instance, they may have had to work their way up. During this time, they probably would have been able to go out without people recognizing them. This may have been something they enjoyed, or they might have wanted other people to recognize them. Either way, this would have been an experience that wouldn't have lasted forever. Unknown Even so, there is a strong chance that they had no idea what hat happen in the future, and so there would have been no reason for them to appreciate how their life was. If they had ...

Women And People Of Color Benefit From Growing At-Home Businesses The Most

In August 2020, on a quiet residential street in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood of Seattle, a tiny emerald bar suddenly appeared inside a converted garage facing the road. It drew the neighborhood, with families walking to pick up four-packs of cider to-go, grab lollipops for their kids or treats for their dogs, and talk to the owner, a woman who had turned her passion project into reality just as the world was shutting down. Caitlin Braam’s Yonder Cider, a business she and her husband, Jon, had poured their savings into to start, launched just before the pandemic without a physical space yet, but before long, she had realized it could slip away entirely. So she opened up at the only place she could: home. The city had closed the street by Braam’s house to cars, and, with many of the ...

Hearing People’s Personal Stories Might Change Your Mind About The Build Back Better Act?

When U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said that he wouldn’t support President Joe Biden’s signature Build Back Better Act, he set off a wave of breaking news alerts. It was fitting. For months, media coverage has breathlessly focused on the behind-the-scenes wrangling and hour-by-hour negotiations around the legislation. How much has been slashed from the bill today? What does it mean for the future of the Democratic and Republican parties? The roughly US$2 trillion proposal is designed to bolster what is widely seen as a frayed social safety net. But most Americans don’t think it will benefit people like them, a recent NPR/Marist poll shows. And a quarter of Americans can’t even say whether they like or dislike the legislation. It’s no wonder the nation is so indifferent about the sweep...

Postcards May Be The Answer To Get People The Help They Need From The Government

President Joe Biden’s comprehensive social safety net bill faces a tough road to passage. But if Democrats succeed in getting it through the Senate and Biden signs it, there’s another challenge ahead for the legislation: How to get its many programs – providing tax cuts for the middle class, expanding access to affordable housing, higher education, health care coverage and child care – to the people it aims to help. If the people who need these programs do not know about them or do not know how to enroll, the programs won’t do any good. Older, poorer, less educated and foreign-born people often do not sign up for benefits to which they are entitled because they do not know about them or do not know how to access them. Already, government agencies are setting up websites to provide informa...

Build Back Better Could Help End Subminimum Wages For People With Disabilities

Many people with disabilities are paid just pennies. Build Back Better could help end that. For almost a century, it has been completely legal for companies to pay workers with disabilities mere cents on the hour. Employees have reported receiving pennies in their paychecks, with no limit on how little they can be paid. This practice of paying “subminimum wage,” which the U.S. Department of Labor allows under the auspices of maintaining employment opportunities for people with disabilities, has also led to some workers being sequestered in workshops away from the regular workforce, where they have little opportunity to advance into other jobs. About 1,500 of those workshops remain nationwide, employing more than an estimated 100,000 people with disabilities at companies including Goodwil...
