Research Shows How Subtle Forms Of Sexism In Financial Services Led To Recent City Scandals

How subtle forms of sexism in financial services led to recent City scandals – what research shows. When I first worked in the City of London, a few years out of university, a company-appointed “style consultant” suggested I would be taken more seriously as a female professional if I wore more make-up and exchanged my trousers for skirt suits. At the time, I was under the naïve impression that workplace sexism was more or less a thing of the past. But I soon found out I was wrong and this conversation served as an early red flag. That was 20 years ago. And while the financial and professional service industries have changed for the better, they may not have changed enough. A parliamentary committee has been tasked with renewing an inquiry into sexism in the City of London following clai...

Georgia Election Law Expert Explains 5 Key Things As Fulton County Charges Donald Trump With Racketeering, Other Felonies

Fulton County charges Donald Trump with racketeering, other felonies – a Georgia election law expert explains 5 key things to know. An Atlanta, Georgia, grand jury indicted former President Donald Trump on Aug. 14, 2023, charging him with racketeering and 12 other felonies related to his alleged attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat in the state. Eighteen of Trump’s allies and associates, including former Trump attorney Rudolph Giuliani and former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, were also indicted for racketeering and other felony charges for their alleged involvement in the scheme. This marks Trump’s fourth indictment in five months – and the second to come from his efforts to undo the election results that awarded the presidency to Joe Biden. Fani Willis, the district ...

During The Pandemic Discrimination Took A Heavy Toll On Asian American Students

Discrimination took a heavy toll on Asian American students during the pandemic. Experiencing discrimination significantly harmed the well-being of Asian and Asian American college students in the U.S. during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s the key finding of our study, which compared over 6,000 survey responses from Asian and Asian American students who took the National College Health Assessment – an annual survey of student health behaviors – in the fall of 2019 and the fall of 2020. Our study focused only on Asians and Asian Americans. Others have found that both Asian and Native American ethnic groups experienced the highest rates of COVID-19-related discrimination. We found that Asian and Asian American students experienced high levels of stressors during the COVI...

The SCOTUS Affirmative Action Ruling

Unpacking the SCOTUS Affirmative Action Ruling. Long before the recent ruling, a sequence of the Court’s decisions had been gradually eroding the practice. “A student must be treated based on his or her experiences as an individual—not on the basis of race. Many universities have for too long done just the opposite. And in doing so, they have concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not challenges bested, skills built, or lessons learned but the color of their skin. Our constitutional history does not tolerate that choice.” This distorted echo of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “content of character” declaration concluded the United States Supreme Court’s consolidated decision in two affirmative action higher education cases brought this term by Plaintiff Studen...

How Social Media Can Help Conspiracy Theories Spread And Even Spark Violence

Conspiracy theories: how social media can help them spread and even spark violence. Conspiracy theory beliefs and (more generally) misinformation may be groundless, but they can have a range of harmful real-world consequences, including spreading lies, undermining trust in media and government institutions and inciting violent or even extremist behaviors. Former US president Donald Trump’s repeaded false statements about the 2020 election having been “stolen” from him eventually led supporters to attack the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. Wikimedia, CC BY For example, some conspiracy theories claim that the Covid-19 pandemic is a hoax or a plot by a secret cabal to control the world population. Such beliefs can lead to a rejection of vital health measures, such as wearing masks or getting va...

For Black Women Student Loan Debt Has Fueled The Pay Gap

It took Nichole Herring 10 years after graduating college before she could begin to pay down her $45,000 in student loans regularly. Then came the pandemic. Herring, who started working in communications for education nonprofits not long after graduating in 2009, was out of work for 15 months. In that time, she made more than 150 calls to unemployment offices in Virginia and Washington, D.C., to try to access the benefits she was owed. But her applications were never processed. In that time, some relief came from a pause on federal student loan payments, but she still had to make payments on her private loans. She could make only a couple as she depleted her savings and took on additional debt to make rent. Five of her family members died due to complications from COVID-19. She applied ...

Trump’s 3 Upcoming Trials And His Indictment In The Jan. 6 Case May Not Keep Him Off The Campaign Trail

Trump indicted in Jan. 6 case – but his 3 upcoming trials may not keep him off the campaign trail. Most commentators who have discussed Donald Trump’s pending criminal trials in New York, Florida and – with the late-day revelation on Aug. 1, 2023, that he has been indicted by a Washington, D.C., grand jury – in the nation’s capital, have concluded that those trials would require his presence. And that would compromise his ability to campaign vigorously for the Republican nomination and the presidency. The U.S. Constitution protects defendants’ rights to be present at their criminal trials, prohibiting the government from holding trials against a defendant in the defendant’s absence. This rule differentiates the United States from other democracies that allow criminal trials to be held in ...

Trump Faces Additional Charges In The Classified Documents Case

Trump faces additional charges – 4 essential reads to understand the case against him for hoarding classified documents. Former President Donald Trump was indicted yet again on July 27, 2023, by federal prosecutors. While many were anticipating an imminent indictment related to Trump’s actions on Jan. 6, 2021, when a group of his followers violently stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s election, the new indictment instead added to the charges Trump already faced for hoarding, mishandling and illegally sharing presidential documents after he left office and refusing to return them. The new indictment – called a “blockbuster” on CNN by former Manhattan prosecutor Karen Agnifilo – alleges that Trump attempted to “delete security camera f...

AI Could Make Political Campaigns More Deceptive Than Ever

6 ways AI can make political campaigns more deceptive than ever. Political campaign ads and donor solicitations have long been deceptive. In 2004, for example, U.S. presidential candidate John Kerry, a Democrat, aired an ad stating that Republican opponent George W. Bush “says sending jobs overseas ‘makes sense’ for America.” Bush never said such a thing. The next day Bush responded by releasing an ad saying Kerry “supported higher taxes over 350 times.” This too was a false claim. These days, the internet has gone wild with deceptive political ads. Ads often pose as polls and have misleading clickbait headlines. Campaign fundraising solicitations are also rife with deception. An analysis of 317,366 political emails sent during the 2020 election in the U.S. found that deception was t...

The Jan. 6 Investigation Laid The Groundwork For The Special Counsel Targeting Trump For Prosecution

Targeting Trump for prosecution – 4 essential reads on how the Jan. 6 investigation laid the groundwork for the special counsel. With the news on July 18, 2023, that Special Counsel Jack Smith had informed former President Donald Trump that he was a target of the federal investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and the related Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, speculation began immediately among political analysts and pundits about what charges the former president might face. But criminal investigations are not public, so drawing conclusions about what charges Smith might bring would have to rely on indications from other sources. One place to find some possible hints: Smith’s investigation into Trump came on the heels of the sprawling public investi...
