Some Parents Are Being Forced To Feed Their Babies In Less Healthy Ways Due To Infant Formula Shortages

Infant formula shortages forced some parents to feed their babies in less healthy ways. One third of families who relied on formula to feed their babies during the COVID-19 pandemic were forced by severe infant formula shortages to resort to suboptimal feeding practices that can harm infant health, according to our research published in the journal Maternal and Child Nutrition. Infant formula shortages left 70% of U.S. store shelves bare in May 2022, with 10 states reporting out-of-stock rates of 90% or greater. As psychology researchers who study breastfeeding, this situation left us concerned for the safety of infant nutrition. With two colleagues who focus on public health, we conducted an online survey of over 300 infant caregivers in the U.S. to understand how many families had trou...

Snakes And The Benefits In Our Daily Life

In countries like India, Snakes are worshipped as Gods. The benefits of snakes to the environment have been understood by many countries. For example, in nations where grains are harvested, certain snakes such as rat snake are released in the farms to control rodents and rats which cause destruction. It must also be noted that not all snakes eat only rats but some also eat birds, snails, eggs, frogs, toads, lizards and one of the main enemy of the farmer - the grasshopper. According to surveys conducted by biologists, a healthy number of snakes in an environment are important for a balanced eco-system. For example, a toad or frog will eat an insect capable of causing destruction to grain, the frog will be eaten by a rat snake, and the rat snake in turn by a cobra. Although snakes are ofte...

World Health Day: Why Aren’t Americans Eating Enough Fruits And Veggies

Americans aren't eating enough fruits and veggies. Why? Most people know that fruits and vegetables are key to a healthy diet, but they may not know exactly how many, and the amounts, they should be eating daily. Some may believe they are on the right track but are surprised to learn they are underestimating the amount needed to meet nutrition recommendations. A survey conducted by the International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA) confirms that Americans are largely underestimating how many fruits and vegetables they need to eat on a daily basis. Consumers surveyed estimate the daily number of recommended servings to be 3-4 servings a day, short of the actual recommended 5 servings per day defined by the World Health Organization. For consumers to work toward achieving a healthier lifes...

World Health Day

World Health Day: Children's Health and Mid-Day Meals. The World Health Organisation (WHO) - a UN agency concerned with public health at the international level - was founded on 7th April, 1948. In order to commemorate its founding, it was decided to observe 7th April as the World Health Day. While the WHO uses the day to spread awareness about some health issue of major importance, the same is also used by various organisations working in the field of public health to draw people's attention to issues of concern and put forth some solutions. In India, hunger and malnutrition are two such issues, and the Mid-day Meal Scheme (MDMS) is one of the solutions. On 28th November, 2001, the Supreme Court of India directed the State Governments "to implement the Mid-Day Meal Scheme by providin...

Reinforcing A Legacy Of Racism In Medical Knowledge — Leading American Medical Journal Continues To Omit Black Research

Leading American medical journal continues to omit Black research, reinforcing a legacy of racism in medical knowledge. The leading U.S. medical journal, read regularly by doctors of all specialties, systematically ignores an equally reputable and rigorous body of medical research that focuses on Black Americans’ health. Medical research is one of the keys in providing health care. SJ Objio for Unsplash, CC BY-SA The American Medical Association created a segregated “whites only” environment more than 100 years ago to prohibit Black physicians from joining their ranks. This exclusionary and racist policy prompted the creation in 1895 of the National Medical Association, a professional membership group that supported African American physicians and the patients they served. Today, the NMA r...

Frazzled Health Care Workers – Poor Sleep May Turn Stress Into Poor Mental Health

Health care workers are frazzled – and poor sleep may turn stress into poor mental health. Health care workers often put the health and safety of their patients first, neglecting to take care of themselves. By providing continuous services around the clock, many experience short and poor-quality sleep, risking not only their own health and safety but also increasing the risk of making errors that can affect patient safety. I am an occupational health researcher who studies work, sleep and health among health care workers. My research has found that emotional labor – such as using fake smiles to hide true feelings – and work-family conflict – such as clashing demands between roles at work and at home – are both linked to depressive symptoms among health care workers. And poor sleep quality...

Even When We’re Not Hungry Here’s Why We Crave Food

Here’s why we crave food even when we’re not hungry. Food cravings are very familiar to most people. We may see or smell food and want to eat, or sometimes we suddenly feel like eating something delicious. These intense desires occur even when we’re not hungry and can be very difficult to resist. There are many reasons why we may “feel” hungry even if our stomachs aren’t growling. Physical hunger in our bodies is controlled by complex physiological signals which stimulate our appetite and then suppress it after we’ve eaten (known as satiety). However, eating is much more than just responding to a biological need. There’s another system that drives and motivates us to consume foods that are rich in energy (calories): the brain’s “food reward” system. The rewarding nature of food can eas...

A Neurologist Explains Why Springing Forward Into Daylight Saving Time Is A Step Back For Health is worse than the fall time change

Springing forward into daylight saving time is a step back for health – a neurologist explains the medical evidence, and why this shift is worse than the fall time change. As people in the U.S. prepare to set their clocks ahead one hour on Sunday, March 12, 2023, I find myself bracing for the annual ritual of media stories about the disruptions to daily routines caused by switching from standard time to daylight saving time. About one-third of Americans say they don’t look forward to these twice-yearly time changes. And nearly two-thirds would like to eliminate them completely, compared to 21% who aren’t sure and 16% who would like to keep moving their clocks back and forth. But the effects go beyond simple inconvenience. Researchers are discovering that “springing ahead” each March is ...

Are You Thinking About Cosmetic Surgery? At Last, Some Clarity On Who Can Call Themselves A Cosmetic Surgeon

Thinking about cosmetic surgery? At last, some clarity on who can call themselves a surgeon. When is a surgeon not a surgeon? It’s a riddle that’s long puzzled regulators and consumers. But it may soon be solved. Vidal Balielo Jr/Pexels, CC BY-SA State and territory health ministers have decided to restrict the title “surgeon” to specialist doctors. The move represents a significant change in Australian medical regulation. So, if you’re thinking of having cosmetic surgery in 2023 (or beyond), these reforms might help you choose the right health professional. What’s the problem? For as long as cosmetic enhancements have been offered in Australia, there have been no rules about which medical practitioners can call themselves cosmetic surgeons. Consequently, any registered medical practi...

A Simple Egg Sandwich Good For You

The Health Benefits Of A Simple Egg Sandwich. This is the typical conversation most mornings and sometimes at weekends during snack time, between my wife and my 4 year old daughter. "Mum, I'm hungry." "What would you like to eat?" "Egg sandwich." She wants a fried egg, cooked in a small dab of virgin olive oil over moderate heat with a sprinkling of freshly ground pepper in a sandwich of freshly baked wholegrain homemade bread. I introduced her to eggs when she was a toddler. Eggs are easy to chew and should be part of a daily diet given to any child of one year old or older. I remember when my daughter as a toddler would eat the egg white first and then pop the whole yolk of a hard-boiled egg straight into her mouth. I still remember when I was a child and my mother used to give me a...
