Mixed Verdict Brings Complicated Feelings And Hope For Accountability, For Weinstein Survivors

Survivors of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual violence have complicated feelings about the mixed verdict issued Monday in his Los Angeles trial. Weinstein was found guilty on three of the seven counts he faced for assaulting women in Los Angeles County: forcible rape, sexual penetration by a foreign object and forcible oral copulation. All of those convictions related to the allegations of one woman, known as Jane Doe #1 during the trial, as part of the wave of allegations that first broke against the producer five years ago. He was found guilty on two felony sexual assault charges in a separate criminal trial in New York in 2020; at this same trial, he was also acquitted on two counts of predatory sexual assault. In Los Angeles, Weinstein was acquitted on one count of...

For US Negotiators Brittney Griner’s Case Was Difficult For One Key Reason: She Was Guilty

The release from Russian prison of WNBA star Britney Griner has been greeted with general delight in the United States. Announcing the deal that saw her freed on Dec. 8, 2022, President Joe Biden lauded the “painstaking and intense negotiations” that made it happen. Others may have legitimate concerns over the equivalence of the exchange, which saw convicted arms merchant Viktor Bout returned to Russia. As a longtime scholar of Russian law, I believe the episode prompts a reflection on the application of Russian law in Griner’s case, and more broadly consideration about such exchanges in general. The problem American negotiators face in such situations is that it matters whether the U.S. citizen is guilty of committing the crime alleged under foreign law or whether there has been a misc...

A Masterclass In Unfaithful Adaptation: Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman

Whether it’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Call the Midwife or, more recently, Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, most of us will have enjoyed a book-to-TV adaptation. In the process, we might also have had to endure a family member or friend smugly informing us that what we’re watching is, in fact, “nothing like the book”. Before we get into this, full disclosure: when it comes to comic books, and especially Sandman, I am that guy. Nothing would give me more pleasure than to catalogue for you every minor way in which the new Netflix series about Morpheus, maker of dreams, differs from the original comics, which started in 1989. Sure, you all loved the episode in the diner, for example, but honestly, it bears only a passing resemblance to the comics version. Think The Corinthian – the bad guy – is scary...

Angela Lansbury – A Storied Career Sure To Touch People For Years To Come

I never met Angela Lansbury, but she was one of those icons that felt like a trusted friend and family member. Every Sunday evening, I devoured Jessica Fletcher’s activities in Murder, She Wrote – catching the bad guys and saving another poor victim from eternal damnation. The younger generation discovered her as Mrs Potts in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and more recently as the balloon seller in Mary Poppins returns (a role created as a cameo appearance for Julie Andrews, who turned it down so attention was not taken away from Emily Blunt). Disney considered Lansbury for the original casting of Mary Poppins, so it is fitting that one of her last film appearances return full circle to her earlier Hollywood career. Lansbury, who died on October 11 2022, was a constant presence in film, st...

Celebrity Pets

Life is good for most celebrity's pets. It seems to be a fad these days to flaunt your pet in public if you're a celebrity. The most popular is the canine. I am not sure who was the very first person to start it, but it definitely caught on like wild fire. A movie in Hollywood that definitely influenced this trend was Legally Blonde. Reese Witherspoon's dog Bruiser in the movie went everywhere with her. She dressed him up in clothes and jewels. She pampered him as if he were a child. Not only did movies influence this trend, but so did the real life celebrities. Paris Hilton was one of the first that most people probably remember. Paris and her Chihuahua Tinkerbell make the pages of several magazines every week. She turned a simple dog into a fashion accessory. If you can believe it she...

Pop Icon Olivia Newton-John Was The Rare Performer Whose Career Flourished Through Different Phases

Olivia Newton-John was a versatile artist with an appeal that spanned generations, and who played an important role in claiming a space for Australian popular culture on the world stage. She was the rare performer whose career flourished through different phases, and who found success exploring many facets of her talent. Born in Cambridge in 1948, Newton-John moved to Melbourne at age 6 (becoming one of a myriad of non-Australian celebrities wholeheartedly claimed by this country). In her teens she started to build up her profile on the local performing circuits, also appearing on pop music television program The Go!! Show. In the 1960s, Australian musical acts saw moving to the UK as a vital part of their career progression. Newton-John became part of the steady stream of expats pursu...

Famous Frat Houses In The Movies

In most cases, fraternity houses in the movies are fictitious and are not anything like a real fraternity is ran. In some cases this is not always the case. The Heard v. Depp Trial – An Opportunity To Discuss The Nuances Of Intimate Partner Violence Not Just A Media Spectacle

Strip away the celebrity intrigue and media frenzy, and the high-profile court battle between actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard involves issues painfully familiar to many women and men across America. The civil defamation case, which ended on June 1, 2022 with a jury ruling largely in favor of Depp, centered around discussion of intimate partner violence. IPV is experienced by an estimated 6.6 million women and 5.8 million men each year in the U.S. Depp filed the libel lawsuit against Heard after she wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post describing her experience as a “public figure representing domestic violence.” A jury found that Heard had defamed Depp and awarded the American actor in excess of US$10 million in damages. Meanwhile Heard was awarded $2 million in a counterclaim after ...

Visual Catharsis For Uncertain Times ‘Is It Cake?’

I doubt that even Netflix expected “Is It Cake?” to be such a hit. The premise, if you haven’t already binged the TV series, involves professional bakers trying to fool judges by creating cakes that don’t look like dessert but instead appear to be everyday commodities – purses, toys, fast food. But while most critics see this as just another iteration of mindless TV, I see “Is It Cake?” as deeply tied to a cultural moment in which deception – and learning how to recognize it – has become a part of everyday life. A show like “Is It Cake?” offers a safe way for viewers to test their capacity to spot a fake. This may seem like a stretch; cake and conspiracy are hardly the same thing. Yet as an art historian who researches the history of visual deception, I’ve noticed that throughout Ameri...
