If Your Thinking Of Quitting Your Job Or Joining The ‘Great Resignation’? Here’s What An Employment Lawyer Advises

Elizabeth C. Tippett, University of Oregon Record numbers of Americans have quit their jobs in recent months, with more than 4.4 million submitting their resignation in September alone. Millions more may be preparing to follow them to the exits – one survey found that around a third of workers wanted to make a career change. But one of the things I learned over the years as a lawyer and later as a professor specializing in employment law is that timing and preparation matter when it comes to quitting a job. So even if you have another job lined up, it’s worth considering a few factors that might influence whether you quit now or stay in your current role for a few weeks – or months. 1. No unemployment insurance In general, workers who quit are not eligible for unemployment insurance. In...

What Employers Can Learn From The Great Resignation

It’s a startling fact — people are quitting their jobs at a higher rate than normal. According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report released in November of 2021, a record 4.5 million people resigned that month. You don’t have to look hard to find out why. A LinkedIn survey found that 74% of respondents said the pandemic was a wake-up call and more time at home led them to think twice about their current job. Some pointed to stress, while others cited general dissatisfaction. As someone who is hard-wired to find silver linings in every situation, no matter how dire, I think we as employers must accept there are lessons to be learned and work we can do to better support employees. 1) Embrace flexibility One thing we learned from the pandemic is we all have lives outside of the office. A Trend That Began Before The Pandemic The ‘Great Resignation’ – And Bosses Need To Get Used To It

Ian O. Williamson, University of California, Irvine Finding good employees has always been a challenge - but these days it’s harder than ever. And it is unlikely to improve anytime soon. The so-called quit rate – the share of workers who voluntarily leave their jobs – hit a new record of 3% in September 2021, according to the latest data available from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The rate was highest in the leisure and hospitality sector, where 6.4% of workers quit their jobs in September. In all, 20.2 million workers left their employers from May through September. Companies are feeling the effects. In August 2021, a survey found that 73% of 380 employers in North America were having difficulty attracting employees – three times the share that said so the previous year. And 70%...

Kennedy Resignation Sparks New Urgency for First-Time Women Candidates of Color

If elected to Congress, they would counter conservative decisions from the court with progressive lawmaking. Nearly two years into the racially charged Trump administration and widespread exposure of sexual harassment and assault of women in public life, women of color have been engaged and eager to change the face of the Democratic Party and Congress. They now find new urgency in the recently announced retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose swing vote seat will likely be claimed by a hard-line conservative this year. President Donald Trump announced his list of replacements for Kennedy, many of whom are White social conservatives hostile to organized labor and young enough to steer the direction of the court for decades. Meanwhile, the rest of the nat...
