Society’s dependence on the internet: 5 cyber issues the coronavirus lays bare

As more and more U.S. schools and businesses shutter their doors, the rapidly evolving coronavirus pandemic is helping to expose society’s dependence – good and bad – on the digital world. Entire swaths of society, including classes we teach at American University, have moved online until the coast is clear. As vast segments of society are temporarily forced into isolation to achieve social distancing, the internet is their window into the world. Online social events like virtual happy hours foster a sense of connectedness amid social distancing. While the online world is often portrayed as a societal ill, this pandemic is a reminder of how much the digital world has to offer. The pandemic also lays bare the many vulnerabilities created by society’s dependence on the internet. These incl...

AI could constantly scan the internet for data privacy violations, a quicker, easier way to enforce compliance

You’re trailing bits of personal data – such as credit card numbers, shopping preferences and which news articles you read – as you travel around the internet. Large internet companies make money off this kind of personal information by sharing it with their subsidiaries and third parties. Public concern over online privacy has led to laws designed to control who gets that data and how they can use it. The battle is ongoing. Democrats in the U.S. Senate recently introduced a bill that includes penalties for tech companies that mishandle users’ personal data. That law would join a long list of rules and regulations worldwide, including the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard that regulates online credit card transactions, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, th...

Craigslist turns 25 – a reminder that a more democratic version of the internet can still thrive

Fake news. Online surveillance. Phishing scams. Biased algorithms. It’s easy to be cynical about the internet, and harder to remember a time when being online felt less commercial and more democratic. But there was a period when websites didn’t rely on user data for profit margins, when people still viewed the internet as a radical laboratory for freedom and liberty. Can those ideas and values from the earliest days of the web be revived? Or is the internet a lost cause? In my new book, “An Internet for the People,” I look at one popular website that has a lot to teach us: Craigslist. Twenty-five years after its launch, Craigslist is a reminder that the earlier, more democratic version of the internet can still thrive. The platform has weathered the internet’s boom-and-bust cycle, wi...

The McDonald’s Frork: A Utensil Whose Main Purpose Is To Poke The Internet

At first glance, the fork-like utensil, with its french-fry tines, causes a small mental schism, like when you see a movie character with a chain saw for a hand. It’s just so . . . unnatural. But unlike Ash Williams and his chain saw hand, the “frork” is real. Well, apparently real. I have yet to hold one in my hand. I’ve only seen it in photos, on social networks and in the video above with infomercial pitchman Anthony Sullivan, which, at this point, makes the frork as fictional as a horror-film hero with an appendage that can clear cut a small park. McDonald’s provides a number to call to “learn how to get the Frork and coupons to try all three Signature Crafted Recipes,” the new “premium” toppings that ostensibly are the reason you need the DIY utensil: to mop up those go...

White College Girls Sing Kanye West Song With Racial Slur At Party; Internet Gets Triggered

A group of young white women were caught on an Instagram video dancing and singing along with a Kanye West song entitled “Gold Digger.” Controversy has ensued since the video went public and became viral due to the girls singing the “n-word” when it came up in the song. This event happened at an Alphi Phi sorority party at the University of New Hampshire. A racism “watchdog” type of Facebook group entitled “All Eyes on UNH” featured the video on their page with a caption that was none too friendly. Allegations of racism and bigotry were bandied about. The reality here is that while racial slurs are always taboo, labeling these young girls as racist for singing along to popular music is absurd. Especially when referring to rap music, where words like what were sung in the song by ...
