What Is COVAX And Why Does It Matter For Getting Vaccines To Developing Nations?

There is a global effort to distribute vaccines to poorer countries, but some of the world’s largest countries, including the U.S., Russia and China, do not intend to support the effort. That lack of backing could have devastating consequences for accessing a COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S. and many poor countries around the world. That is because the U.S. will not have access to vaccines secured by the initiative, called COVAX. Also, COVAX may lack the funding it needs to help poor countries control their epidemics, enabling the virus to continue to circle the globe. I am an ethicist at Binghamton University and am interested in COVAX because I work on global health and justice. What is the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) Facility? COVAX, formally known as The COVID-19 Vaccines Glo...

Why you’re getting so many political text messages right now

Text messages and emails from political campaigns are pouring into Americans’ phones and inboxes right now. It’s happening to political junkies, to people who gave their phone numbers to campaigns, and even to people who try to keep their contact information off mass mailing lists. I study political campaigns, including how they use social media and mobile phones to build support. In my book “Presidential Campaigning in the Internet Age,” I document the history of how campaigns have used the web, social media and phones in efforts to attract independents and urge supporters to take action. I also used my personal email account – the same o...

One key difference, however, is unlike in the 2016 election, which was largely devoid of any talk about increasing Pell Grants for students from low- and moderate-income families to pay for college, this time around Pell Grants are part of the discussion. Leading Democratic candidates – Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and, most recently, Joe Biden – have floated their own proposals. Biden’s plan – released in October 2019 – distinguishes itself from those of his competitors, however, by recognizing the important role that Pell Grants do and should play in paying for higher education. Biden has proposed to double the maximum Pell Grant award from its current level ...

Exclusive! DeRay Mckesson Recalls Getting Tear-Gassed In Ferguson, Missouri

Famed Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson recently spoke to DJ Vlad and discussed the trials and tribulations he had to face while in Ferguson, Missouri last year. The first day DeRay admits he "was just trying to see what was going on," but it's what happened the following evening that led him to become an important figure in the movement. "The second day that I was there I think was the first day of the curfew - it was like a midnight curfew - and we had tear gas around eight o' clock, and I'll never forget getting tear-gassed for the first time," he recalled. "In in that moment I became a protester.
