Black Economic Security

The state of the African-American family is now at a crossroads in terms of where we are headed. Through poverty, violence and lack of opportunity, we are failing to develop the next generation of leadership in ways that will assure a net gain for us as a people and for America in general. Now comes the report from the Black AIDS Institute that if black America was a country, we'd rank 16th in the world in AIDS cases, with nearly 600,000 people currently living with HIV. With HIV, hypertension and diabetes all prevalent in our community, we would place 105th in national life expectancy as an individual country. We are all aware of people who eat too much salt, drink too much pop or are always "on the prowl". The problem with these behaviors is that far too often the consequences of them ...

Can Harlem Stay Black?

Black residents arrived to Harlem after 1905, as part of the Great Migration that saw Blacks flood northern cities like Chicago and Detroit. By the 1930s the Harlem Renaissance took place, and was probably one of the greatest cornerstones of African-American art history. The iconic Apollo opened during that period, a venue for almost exclusively African-American artists. And although the Black population in Harlem peaked in the 1950s, Latino residents have joined African-Americans to continue the Afro/Carib culture in the community. If any place in New York City was Black, it was Harlem. And now some are asking how long before Harlem is Black no more? Since New York City's economic revival in the late 1980s, gentrification has become a more commonly heard phrase, growing into a hotly deb...

Whose Fault Is It for the Black Community’s Downfall?

The dollar lasts only 6 hours in black neighborhoods across America. Compare this to 28 days in the Asian community and 19 days in the Jewish community. Because of this lack of economic cohesiveness we can clearly see the decline in the black community for the past 60 years. The money situation only represents the mindset of the people using it. This lack of economic understanding has lead to high crime rates and deteriorating neighborhoods. However there is a blame game going on between black men and women as to who is at fault for this unfortunate circumstances. Visit YouTube and many blog sites and you will find videos and articles where black men and women are going back to forth blaming the other sex for this situation. This article seeks to answer this question once and for all. Do...

Should White People Be Scared To Give Black People Compliments?

The answer is "no." White people should not be scared to give Black people compliments. However, one probably wants to "think before speaking." The reality is that there are many White people that are scared or apprehensive to give a Black person a compliment for fear that they may say the wrong thing. In today's politically correct environment, society as a whole doesn't want to offend others. This is especially true for Whites given the recent backlash felt by some well known Whites who have made comments about Blacks that resulted in a great deal of negative press and counter comments. Two such examples were the comments made by Bill O'Reilly (host of "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News) reference Sylvia's Restaurant (Black patroned and owned) in Harlem and Senator Joe Biden's comments ...

5 Things That Black and White People Don’t Understand About Each Other

In the next couple of months, we might very well have our first black president here in the U. S. So I feel that black and white people in this country should start working on embracing, or at least respecting, each other's culture. There are a lot of things about white people that many black Americans don't understand and vice versa. Many times we have a negative reaction to things we don't understand. But when we see our fellow Americans of other ethnicities engage in activities that we can't quite relate to, we should respect that and appreciate their differences. Because no matter how much we try to rationalize, there are things that black and white people will never "get" about each other. With that being said, I have compiled a short list of 5 Things that black and white people don't...

Rise, Black People

The entire Black race has been forsaken since birth, but we have no one to blame but ourselves, because we allowed it to happened. In fact, everything that has happened to Black individuals, we allowed it to happen, but we can change. We can make life better for ourselves. One of the greatest downfalls of Black individuals is the belief in god. I just can't understand why Black people believe in god, when the non-existent being did, nor does nothing to support or even, at the very least, accept the existence and equality of Black people. For some reason, Black Americans put god first in their lives, ahead of real people that actually exist in their lives, to include family. There is absolutely no proof of god's existence. None the less, Black people worship this non-existent supreme being...

Reevaluating the Black Power Movement – From Mayor Richard G Hatcher to President Barack Obama

Though misunderstood and misrepresented by the media and its opponents, the 1960s Black Power movement touched every aspect of American culture, and like the "New Negro" Movement of the 1920s, African Americans came of age, becoming self-determining and racially conscious. Black people- sharecroppers, unionists, welfare and tenants rights organizers, students, intellectuals, poets, musicians and singers and politicians-grounded in the ideology of Black Power, began to organize around controlling their own lives and institutions. The movement pointedly questioned the capacity of America's democracy to extend justice, citizenship and equality of opportunity to African Americans, castigating America for its failure to live up to the principles of democracy. Unfortunately, the confrontational...

Book Review Of Black Civil Rights In America

In chapter one, Kevern Verney, begins with explaining about growth of urban population in American society in the last decades of 19th century by internal migration and mostly overseas immigration. Between 1880 and 1921 most of the immigrants arrived from southern and eastern European countries, but in the world war period because of wartime condition and also legal restrictions, European immigration fell and industrial growth led to great migration (1915-1925) in which 7 million African Americans escaped from racism in rural southern United States into cities. In fact they were offended from southern cities for some reasons such as suffering economic condition, and on the other hand boom in industrial productions created job opportunities for blacks in north. Their situation in north was...
