Mobsters in America – Stephanie St Clair – The Queen of the Harlem Numbers Rackets

She was chased out of the Harlem numbers rackets by Dutch Schultz, but when Schultz lay dying from a bullet wound, Stephanie St. Clair had the last laugh. Stephanie St. Clair was born in 1886, in Marseilles, an island in the East Caribbean. At the age of 26 she immigrated to New York City and settled in Harlem. Almost immediately, she hooked up with the Forty Thieves, a white gang who were in existence since the 1850's. There is no record of what St. Clair did for the next ten years, but it's safe to say, considering her ties to the Forty Thieves, a notorious shake-down gang, what she did was anything but legal. In 1922, St. Clair used $10,000 of her own money and started Harlem's first numbers rackets. St. Clair was known for having a violent temper and often cursed her underlings out i...

Should Inmates Be Charged for Their Time in Jail?

This is a question raised by a radio program this morning. The cost for incarceration of prisoners is soaring and the numbers of inmates are increasing. This has put an enormous burden on governments and taxpayers who pay for them doing their time. It would make sense, therefore, to put a charge on them. Many prisoners in Australian jails are millionaires in the real world and can well afford to pay for their crimes in more ways than one. In some overseas jails, such as in Venezuela, images were smuggled out to show how starving inmates are ignored by the government. That country is in financial crisis and would appear to have massive human-rights abuses in many sectors of the community. In its communities many are starving and the situation may turn into a civil war. In North Korea the ...

Successful Strategies For Black Business Owners

Being a black business owner in the United States has never been an easy proposition. We have always had a difficult time finding success with our own entrepreneurial enterprises, and those difficulties only seem to grow in times of economic uncertainty. For today's African-American entrepreneur, it is more important than ever that the right strategies be employed in any commercial endeavor. The most important thing that any businessperson can do to ensure that his or her company is a success is to learn how to manage the most critical aspects of running a successful store. These include financing, marketing, and networking. Failing to meet the challenges of any of these three key areas can result in a failed establishment. Learn how to obtain financing It is in the area of financing th...

Black People Deposit Your Money In Black Owned Banks

Black People (African Americans) deposit your money in Black Owned Banks. A bank is one of the most important if not the most important institution in any community. A bank is a stabilizing force in the community it serves. It loans money to small businesses to help them expand and create jobs. It assist religious and community organizations to help them better address the particular needs of the community. It helps individuals to become home owners and help existing home owners make repairs and additions to their property. The bank does this because it gets the money it uses to make a profit for themselves from the community its located in. People finance the banks, banks in turn should finance the people's needs. This is how it works in every community except ours. In the African Americ...

Common Money Myths That Block Black People From Wealth

I have to start this one off carefully. This one is embedded in the psyche of the American way of life. I have even been guilty on some levels of perpetuating this myth in my life with varying results. I have come to realize that in the pursuit of real wealth, it can stunt your economic growth and keep you trapped financially. "Fake it Till You Make It." These six words can derail you from wealth and leave you fakin it forever. If you are pursuing an acting career and lack some credentials while on an audition, "fake it till you make it," may very well work in your favor. Putting yourself in positions where you have the skill but lack the experience, "fake it till you make it," can be your friend. When dealing with wealth and wealth building in particular, this philosophy becomes a myth, ...

Black Psychosis

Psychosis is a dirty word so I don't expect much appreciation for writing this. But we Blacks need to start owning our circumstances. Racism and discrimination persist but that isn't the point here. The Black community has cultivated a belief system and mental state that have become entrenched into our DNA. I call this the "Black Psychosis" and in contemporary America it is just as responsible for holding our people back as institutional racism. In its basic form, psychosis means a distorted view of reality, usually including false beliefs about what is actually taking place, which then impact how one goes about their daily life. Black psychosis is a form of group psychosis where deep seated emotions, distorted beliefs and behavioral characteristics may not be apparent in any one individu...

Critical Thinking: Why Do Some White People Hate Themselves?

If one pays attention to the mainstream media and/or spends time on different social media sites, they may have come across at least one white person who blames their entire race for all the problems in the world. It is then going to be clear that they are ashamed of the colour of their own skin and what their ancestors have supposedly done. A Strange Affair After one saw this for the first time, they may have wondered why someone would behave in this way. Even so, they may have just carried on with their life and put this experience behind them. Alternatively, it might not have been possible for them to do this, and this could show that they have been exposed to this kind of behaviour on a number of occasions. It is then going to be apparent that this is an outlook that a number of whi...

It’s Time We Stop Ignoring Racism In America

1. Has Racism And Bigotry Been Repackaged In America It's Time We Stop Ignoring Racism In America. Racism has obviously disguised itself in a variety of ways. One of Racism's many personalities allows it to masquerade as justice. This is perhaps the deadliest weapon in violating African American rights. The deaths of Sandra Bland and Trayvon Martin are prime examples of how dangerous race tactics are when placed in the hands of unfair law enforcement. Racially charged killings by authorities are at an all time high and the hatred that rears its ugly head from behind a Patriotic mask has Americans chanting, " Go back to Mexico!" to other Americans. We never see what race the monster is from behind its red, white and blue veil. Make America Great Again? Nobody ever told me that America had ...

Afraid of the Dark – Working With Black Men in Corporate America

I've worked on-and-off in corporate America for 12 years as a consultant, independent contractor, and an employee. In that time, I've had the dubious distinction of being the only black man, and many times, the only black person, at the companies where I was employed. The thing about being the only black person in the office is that it comes with responsibility. Not job responsibility, because that's a given, but psychosocial responsibility. Many times, I, and other black men in similar situations, represent the lone intimate contact that our white colleagues will have with other black people, and black men in particular. The extent of these interactions will be largely determined by their comfort level and acceptance. While many (white people) find it shocking that a black man can stil...

Interracial Dating: Why Not?

Dating a partner of another race defines interracial dating. Is this beyond comprehension for a white person, or a black person? What do we care about the color of a person's skin? I want to find love in all the right places, and if someone white is going to turn me on, respect me as a woman, and I respect him, then we have nothing to fear. The 1990 census reports that 17.6% of black marriages occur with whites, and it is also found that black men are 2.5 times more likely to be married to a white woman than a black woman to a white man (about.com). Just look at the basketball players and their wives; Tiger Woods and his new wife. This is an ongoing trend with men and women. In 1970 there were 310,000 documented cases of interracial marriages; in 1980 there were 651,000 cases reported; a...
