They Built It And People Came

"We're trying to turn a negative into a positive," explained the happy young woman who took my drink order. I asked her if someone loved rabbits or was the cafe's name a Bible reference. Apparently, one coffee shop in Deep East Texas is willing to poke fun with residents of the Bible Belt. Thumpers Coffee and Gift Shop recently opened in the town of Nacogdoches, Texas. The spiritual hub has a few customers in the morning but it's at night that it fully comes to life. As soon as classes end at the nearby campus of SFA-Stephen F. Austin University-students converge on the storefront shop to drink coffee and study. Biblical sayings are painted on canvases throughout the property and a huge, ornate mural is displayed on the ceiling. The cork/message board displays bible studies, resources...

To Be An Alpha Male Or Not To Be

One of the more socially important topics within the dating world is whether a man is an "alpha male" or a "beta male." However, there is a major flaw in feedback as to what exactly makes a man an "alpha" perceived by women. Once and for all, we are going to try to settle the debate on what exactly is an "alpha male" and who is one and who is not. And what exactly is the "turn on" and "hang up" with the whole alpha male vs. beta male. The 2 Types of Alpha Males Type 1: this type is reserved for any animal who lives in the wild where "survival of the fittest" kind of, sort of comes into play. I say "kind of, sort of" because even within the wild kingdom of the animals there is a sort of unspoken code they all abide by. This code is that aggression and violence is only expressed when ...

A Tangled History – Harley Davidson And The Hells Angels

Harley-Davidson and the Hells Angels. Few pairings are as synonymous as those two names. The pairing of Harley Davidson and the Hells Angels is something akin to peanut butter and jelly, but sometimes it turns into oil and water. In other words, sometimes the two don't mix. Since the formation of Hells Angels, Harley Davidson has been their motorcycle of choice, which hasn't always thrilled the company. They faced a negative reaction from the buying public, who connected the company to the biker gang. Since the early days of the biker gang, the Hells Angels have seemed to revel in their poor reputation. To this day many members still wear a patch on their jacket, signifying their "one-percenter" status. The label was given to them in the 1950s after the American Motorcyclist Association ...

Study Reveals Neighborhoods With MLK Streets Are Poorer Than National Average And Highly Segregated

The big idea Poverty rates are almost double the national average in areas surrounding streets named after Martin Luther King Jr., according to our recent study, and educational attainment is much lower. Our geography research, published in the GeoJournal in September 2020, analyzed the racial makeup and economic well-being of 22,286 census blocks in the U.S. with roadways bearing the slain civil rights leader’s name. Streets named after Martin Luther King typically run through multiple census blocks; we identified a total of 955 such streets in the United States. The areas surrounding MLK streets are predominantly African American, with very few white residents, we found. This is particularly true in the South and Midwest. A notable exception includes California, where MLK neighborhoods...

The Selfie Culture

In the modern life, it is fashionable to name the latest trends and technologies with short and crisp words such as SciFi, HiFi and WiFi. The latest addition is the Selfie, which is a photograph of the self, taken by the photographer. It can be taken with a handheld digital camera or tablet or smartphone. Special sticks or stands to hold the smartphones are now available to facilitate better photos without the help of a third person. Selfies are often used for sharing on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. Most of the selfies are taken with a camera held at arm's length without a self-timer. In olden days, people used to photograph the self by uncovering the lens of the camera and running into the shot. Another method was to position the camera on a nearby object or on...

The Past Lives Of Celebrities

Most people don't realize that you can't have karma without reincarnation, and the theory of reincarnation dictates you are the sum total of all your prior existences. Even though you don't consciously remember, all your actions in past lives, negative and positive, created the challenges and rewards you experience today, along with your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual being. While our findings show there may be some exceptions (such as select souls choosing to incarnate with challenges they didn't earn with the intent of helping humanity through their trials), you are a sum total of all your past lives. Although we acknowledge that reincarnation is a theory we can't prove as fact, we're convinced it's a natural part of the evolution of the soul. We also accept that some p...

Why Do Some People Like To Build People Up And Then Tear Them Down?

Even though someone can be seen as a celebrity, there would have been a time when no one knew who they were. That is unless their parents were already famous, and this would have given them the upper hand. In The Beginning Therefore, if one doesn't have famous parents, for instance, they may have had to work their way up. During this time, they probably would have been able to go out without people recognizing them. This may have been something they enjoyed, or they might have wanted other people to recognize them. Either way, this would have been an experience that wouldn't have lasted forever. Unknown Even so, there is a strong chance that they had no idea what hat happen in the future, and so there would have been no reason for them to appreciate how their life was. If they had ...

Deep Roots Of Distrust Shape Vaccine Hesitancy In Polygamous Communities

In polygamous communities, deep roots of distrust shape vaccine hesitancy. From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon church or LDS church, followed government guidelines to protect members of their religious community. On March 25, 2020, the church closed its temples and encouraged members to wear masks. Leaders praised vaccination, which church President Russell M. Nelson, a retired surgeon, called a “literal godsend.” He and other senior members received vaccinations, calling on church members to follow their example. Fundamentalist branches of Mormonism, however – groups who began separating from the LDS church after it ended the institutionally sanctioned practice of polygamy in 1904 – took a different ro...

Life In Gangs Today Differs Drastically From When The ‘West Side Story’ Jets And Sharks Ruled The Streets

The songs are timeless, the casting contemporary and dance routines still daring. But for social scientists like us, Steven Spielberg’s remake of the 1961 hit musical “West Side Story” – a film about two rival street gangs – is more than a 21st-century face-lift of a Broadway classic. Released in theaters on Dec. 10, 2021, it is an opportunity to consider societal changes in the six decades since Maria and Tony stole the hearts of audiences across the world – particularly in the world of gangs. As scholars who have studied gang culture, we find that the soul of the street gang hasn’t changed much since the days of the Jets and the Sharks – but the world around them has. Demographics, economics, technology and public policy have reshaped and reshuffled gang life in America. So dramatic ar...
