The Use And Abuse Of ‘Outdated’ Citizen’s Arrest Laws Set’s The Stage For Vigilantism – Ahmaud Arbery’s Accused Killers Go To Trial

Seth W. Stoughton, University of South Carolina The murder trial of three men accused in the death of unarmed Black jogger Ahmaud Arbery gets underway on Oct. 18, 2021, with the issue of what makes for a lawful citizen’s arrest set to be central to court arguments. Arbery was shot dead on Feb, 23, 2020, after being pursued through a residential area of Brunswick, Georgia. The three men accused in his killing – Greg McMichael, Travis McMichael and William Bryan – contend that they had reason to believe Arbery was responsible for home break-ins in the area. Arbery, they claim, was shot as he tried to resist a legal citizen’s arrest by wrestling a shotgun from Travis McMichael. Whether the defendants acted lawfully will depend, in large part, on the strength of their citizen’s arrest clai...

No Matter What Stage Of Life You Are In, Relationship Goals Will Be A Game Changer

Pastor Michael Todd became a viral sensation thanks to his Relationship Goals video series. The natural next step? This wonderfully insightful book on finding (and keeping) a relationship that will make both you and God happy. Drawing on Biblical scripture, his own experiences as a husband, and the struggles faced by his parishioners, Todd offers a road map to lasting love. He also discusses his vision of single life as an opportunity to learn how to make the Lord part of our sexuality and enter the dating world with the conscious intention of finding a spouse. We were inspired by the nondenominational religious approach that sets this book apart from so many dating guides. And while Todd’s messages are serious, his writing style is down to earth and often quite funny. Relationship Goal...

Youth: A Critical Stage In Life

I enjoy writing to young people like myself not because our old folks know better and do not need the information (which of course they do, and in fact should read it), but because a youthful psyche is one which is easily and readily flexible to both the positive influence (principles, knowledge, truths) about life or the negative appeals in our society. The youthful life is the period where characters are materialized, values are developed and choices are made. The choices and decisions that would transform our lives and even forthcoming generations, in spite of our present dilemma, will be taken during this phase of life. Steven Covey, who was an author and great teacher wrote, "I am not a product of my circumstance. I am a product of my decisions." Hence, the need for enlightenment and...

John Lewis and the masks Black preachers wear on the public stage

U.S. Congressman John Robert Lewis was a Black preacher, inescapably so. Like his spiritual mentor, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the long-standing congressman was an ordained Black Baptist minister. It meant that he not only knew how to parse legislative briefs but also ancient biblical texts and extrapolate wisdom from them to address social issues of great urgency. For Christians like Lewis, preaching, though not an end in itself, is a means by which God reminds a society of God’s concern for community wellness, life, human dignity and freedom in a less-than-perfect world. Preaching, in their understanding, tells the truth about suffering in the contexts of fear and death. Ultimately it declares that evil and despair have an appointed end. Because of this, as John Lewis said i...
