Top Black History Heroes From Texas

There are many notable black historic figures from Texas. Each of them made significant contributions to black history of not only Texas, but the nation at large. Black Texans have made major contributions in politics, military events, music, and sports. The accomplishments of those Texans continue being discussed in history classes and homes throughout the nation. After surviving the 1900 Galveston storm, Arthur 'Jack' Johnson went on to make a name for himself in the world of boxing. At that time, boxing for money was considered a criminal activity, even though it was popular. In Texas, heavyweight boxing matches were illegal. Some of the governors of that period sent Texas Rangers out to shut down boxing matches. Johnson became known as "Papa Jack" or the "Galveston Giant", Johnson wo...

Black Men and the Effects of Marijuana

By Lemar Turner   From the hip hop culture to the white collar businessmen and classy entrepreneurs of today, marijuana is used and loved by a good percentage of African American men. Glorified in the music we listen to and the urban films that we watch, it is a common habit and hobby of many black men across the country. What most black men don't realize is the actual personal and health problems this can cause for their current daily life and their future. Sadly, many young black men lack father figures and positive male role models so without the proper guidance they become curious about what's glorified on t.v. and urban music, "marijuana." Healthy living is very rarely taught in our black families, so it easily becomes ignored by young black men. Three of the biggest effects...

Police Shootings and Black Men – A Hidden Cause

By Steve Boston   We have all had the experience of looking through a window at the surroundings outside when suddenly at some point we recognize that the window we were looking through was actually dirty, and on closer examination wonder how we had not seen all the dust and smudge marks before. Our vision was impaired without really realizing it. Often we can look through the same window countless times before coming to this conclusion. Upon cleaning it we then marvel at the clarity of the view that had been marred before and was obstructed by our own lack of attention and unknowingness. Many of us don't recognize that some of the ideas and beliefs that we hold are like the dirt and smudge on a window that we are so accustomed to looking through that they become a part of our wo...

White Men Dating Black Women – The Secrets to Approaching Black Women

By Gloria S. Walker   Are you a white man who's attracted to black women although you have problems approaching them? Frankly, approaching black women is no different from approaching any other women. However there are a few underlining issues which are affecting the way white men are dealing with interracial dating. In my opinion, the reasons white American men find it difficult to approach black American women is partly due to stereotypes about black women. Unfortunately the stereotypes are distributed by mainstream media. Secondly, white men are often haunted by the "what-if" factor. The "what-if" factor is basically the fear of the unknown. Some popular "what-ifs" are: "what if she says no", "what if she laughs at me", "what if she doesn't like my white skin", "what if she ha...

Why Black History Month?

By R K Jackson Conservative workmates and friends always asked me why Black folks insist on Balkanizing themselves with the term African- American. Are we not all just Americans? I grew up in public schools during the 1960's and early 1970's with little or no instruction on African-American contributions to American life. I always seem to recall that George Washington cut down the cherry tree and that the nation was blessed by the political genius of the Founding Fathers. Who could possibly not have learned about the inventor, Thomas Edison, or simply did not pay attention and ignored Henry Ford's concepts of mass production changing the way everything was manufactured. How about the scientific achievement of everyone from Benjamin Franklin to Jonas Salk? I learned that the conquest of...

Black History Month – Not Just History For History Sake

Dr. Carter G. Woodson, Educator, Entrepreneur, Author and Activist, created "Negro History Week" (now known as Black History Month) for the purpose instilling in Blacks a true value of self based in a real and accurate study of Black Life and History. He believe that if Black students were raised up and educated in an environment that taught the significant Black contributions to the civilized world, (in the areas of economics, politics, government, science, mathematics as well as the Arts), that it would not only create in them a love for self and kind, but that it would also make them better citizens. Dr. Woodson in "The Mis-Education of the Negro" showed that Blacks were not educated to be citizens, they were mis-educated to be tools of service to his once slave master. Therefore the B...

If Racism Is the Sin of White America, Irresponsibility Is the Sin of Black America

There is always a sense of safety when we blame someone even if we are the ones on the wrong. Blame game is usually a self-protective response which is normally aimed at protecting our under-performance. Humans use it to shield themselves from repercussion. Considering the above definition, will I be justified to say that one of the plagues eating America is blame game? The whites are pointing their fingers at blacks while blacks are pointing at whites. Because of this counterproductive approach to sensitive matters, the bridge between white and black Americans continue to widen every other day. Surely, if racism is the sin of White America, irresponsibility is the sin of Black America. The Revolutionary war in 1770s gave the nation a chance to reach for independence and freedom. The rea...

Why Black Wealth Barely Exists

When we say black wealth barely exists, we are being generous. Blacks as a group have owned less than one half of one percent of the total wealth of this country from the end of slavery until 2016. With the inherent disadvantages and economic opposition blacks have been able to prosper as a group in pockets of the country. Harlem was an economic hub, Jackson Ward in Virginia, of course Tulsa Oklahoma and a few others. These Black communities were self sustained and maintained by black commerce. Blacks Americans were industrious opening factories and small businesses perfecting crafts right out of slavery. Forced to work amongst each other and do business with each other, this environment created an atmosphere where a self-sustaining community could be created and prosper. Fast forward pas...
