Who Owns Your Tattoo? Maybe Not You

More than 20 percent of all Americans have at least one tattoo, and for millennials that number jumps to almost 40 percent. What could be more intimately a part of you than a work of body art permanently inked into your skin? You probably assume that the tattoo on your body belongs to you. But, in actuality, somebody else might own your tattoo. Recent lawsuits and events have shown that tattoo artists and companies can have intellectual property rights in tattoos worn by others, including both copyright and trademark rights. Tattoo-related lawsuits are not uncommon. Just this year, a group of tattoo artists for several high-profile athletes, including Lebron James and Kobe Bryant, filed a copyright lawsuit against the creators of the popular NBA 2K video game franchise because tattoos the...

One In Four People Regrets Having Tattoos – Can You Make It Go Away?

Almost half of people between 18 and 35 have tattoos, and almost one in four regrets it, according to a 2016 Harris Poll. Based on an estimate of about 60 million people in that age group, that would mean that about 7.5 million people have tattoo regret. As a primary care physician, I’ve noticed anecdotally that many of my younger patients have regrets about their tattoos. When I ask about them, many say that they got them when they were young, and at the time put little or no research into the decision. With no source (reliable or otherwise) of tattoo information to suggest to my patients, I began to investigate the topic myself. My goal was to write a quick reference for teens that reviewed the health and social issues they might encounter after getting a tattoo. What I found was myri...

As Gender Discrimination And Racism Intersect Transgender People Of Color Face Unique Challenges

Throughout history, transgender people of color have had a place of honor in many indigenous cultures around the world. This changed in many places, however, as European colonizers began forcing indigenous people to follow white social norms. These include anti-Blackness, Christianity and a gender binary that reduced gender to just man and woman. Colonizers presumed that being cisgender, or having a gender identity that is congruent with gender assigned at birth, was the only acceptable norm. For trans people who refused or were unable to conform, colonial societies often used racism and cissexism, or behaviors and beliefs that assume the inferiority of trans people, to invalidate their existence, limit their access to resources and threaten their well-being. For example, colonizers in s...

An Expert Explains What Aphasia Is – The Condition Forcing Bruce Willis To Retire From Acting

Actor Bruce Willis, 67, is “stepping away” from his career in film and TV after being diagnosed with aphasia, his family announced on March 30, 2022. In a message posted on Instagram, his daughter, Rumer Willis, said that the condition was “impacting his cognitive abilities.” Swathi Kiran, director of the Aphasia Research Laboratory at Boston University, explains what aphasia is and how it impairs the communication of those with the condition. What is aphasia? Aphasia is a communication disorder that affects someone’s ability to speak or understand speech. It also impacts how they understand written words and their ability to read and to write. It is important to note that aphasia can take different forms. Some people with aphasia only have difficulty understanding language – a result o...

We Asked 4 Experts: Would Gas Tax Breaks Make A Big Difference When Prices Are Skyrocketing?

With gasoline prices trending over US$4 per gallon nationwide, politicians are feeling the heat. In response, Maryland and Georgia have temporarily waived their state gasoline taxes to reduce the burden on consumers. Other states are considering similar actions, and some members of Congress have called for suspending the federal gas tax. The Conversation asked four experts whether gas tax waivers are an effective way to provide economic relief to U.S. households, and what other impacts these measures could have. Not a windfall Jay Zagorsky, Senior Lecturer in Markets, Public Policy and Law, Boston University As an economist who has studied gasoline prices, I doubt that waiving gas taxes will meaningfully lower prices at the pump. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine boosted gasoline prices dramat...

When I Hear The Word Culture I Reach For My Gun

The work on organizational culture is in its infancy compared to other areas of focus for improving organizations. I completed a quick search of various organizational improvement areas on Google and LinkedIn. I completed a standard search on Google and a LinkedIn "Groups" search for the following organizational improvement areas of focus: strategic planning, performance management, leadership development, talent management, organizational change, employee engagement and organizational culture. Organizational culture finished at the bottom of the list by a wide margin with a return of 3.3 Million results on Google and 52 groups on LinkedIn. Strategic Planning returned over 35 Million results on Google and nearly 500 groups on LinkedIn. Culture definitely isn't eating strategy for lunch on ...

Podcasting’s Goliath – Mr. Joe Rogan

Comedian and podcaster Joe Rogan is caught in a spiral of controversies. It began when “The Joe Rogan Experience” hosted COVID-19 vaccine skeptic Robert Malone and a number of musicians pulled their music off of Spotify in protest. It has continued with Rogan apologizing for using racial slurs in past years, which prompted the streaming service to remove scores of his old episodes from the streaming platform. Given the thousands of hours of content that Rogan has produced, the scrutiny is unlikely to stop there. As we argue in our forthcoming book, Rogan’s podcast has long promoted right-wing comedy and libertarian political voices, including some who trade quite gleefully in racism and misogyny. However, what makes Rogan’s rise particularly important is that it goes beyond the standard...

Diana – The Popular Culture Princess

Despite being dead since 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales, is once again the focus of much attention. This time it’s not due to the anniversary of her death or the apparent breakdown in her son’s relationship. Instead, the much-anticipated film, Spencer starring Kristen Stewart is being released. Focusing on December 1991 at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate, Spencer is an imagining of Diana’s decision to end her marriage to Prince Charles and leave the royal family. Following its world premiere, Stewart’s performance as Diana has already been heralded as Oscar-worthy. The reception of the film even achieved a three-minute standing ovation. In her lifetime, Diana lived out many roles in the public eye. She became a princess after a fairytale-like wedding, a mother, a victim of bulimia, a targ...

The Utterly Pleasing Zoë Kravitz

When your mother is one of the most breathtaking visions to ever grace the boob tube, it’s pretty obviously that you’re not going to grow up to be anything short of dazzling. And that’s certainly true of the utterly pleasing Zoë Kravitz, a product of the marriage between comely Cosby kid Lisa Bonet and psychedelic crooner Lenny Kravitz. Having such wildly creative parents, Zoë showed an affinity for the arts at a young age but wisely put off pursuing a career until she came of age. All the better for skin fans! Zoë made her debut in No Reservations (2007) and the same year appeared in The Brave One alongside Jodie Foster. She wasn’t a brave one when it came to flashing flesh, but after appearing in Assassination of a High School President (2008), Zoë took a hint from nudity-loving costar ...
