Even after blocking an ex on Facebook, the platform promotes painful reminders

Anthony Pinter, a Ph.D. student in information science at the University of Colorado Boulder, recently completed a study on people’s experiences with upsetting and unexpected reminders of an ex on Facebook. His team’s findings are examples of algorithmic cruelty – instances in which algorithms are designed to do something and do it well, but end up backfiring because they can’t fully grasp the nuances of human relationships and behavior. How has social media made breakups more difficult? Anthony Pinter: Breaking up with a loved one has always meant making difficult choices: who gets the couch, who gets the fridge, who gets the cat. Malicious bots and trolls spread vaccine misinformation – now social media companies are fighting back

Social media have become one of the preeminent ways of disseminating accurate information about vaccines. However, a lot of the vaccine information propagated across social media in the United States has been inaccurate or misleading. At a time when vaccine-preventable diseases are on the rise, vaccine misinformation has become a cause of concern to public health officials. At least half of parents of young children report having encountered negative messages about vaccines on social media. Alexander Dummer/Unsplash, CC BY A 2018 study showed that a lot of anti-vaccine information is generated by malicious automated programs – known as bots – and online trolls. In a striking parallel with the 2016 presidential campaign and the 2018 midterm elections, some vaccine misinformation on America...

Why do so many people fall for fake profiles online?

The first step in conducting online propaganda efforts and misinformation campaigns is almost always a fake social media profile. Phony profiles for nonexistent people worm their way into the social networks of real people, where they can spread their falsehoods. But neither social media companies nor technological innovations offer reliable ways to identify and remove social media profiles that don’t represent actual authentic people. It might sound positive that over six months in late 2017 and early 2018, Facebook detected and suspended some 1.3 billion fake accounts. But an estimated 3 to 4 percent of accounts that remain, or approximately 66 million to 88 million profiles, are also fake but haven’t yet been detected. Likewise, estimates are that 9 to 15 percent of Twitter’s 336 mil...

Instagram to remove ‘like’ counts for some US users

Amid humane tech movement, company is testing out functionality to make the social media platform feel less competitive. Facebook Inc.'s Instagram plans to remove the number of "likes" visible on posts for some users in the U.S. to decrease competitive pressure among people on the photo-sharing service. Instagram has been hiding like counts in some markets since April, beginning in Canada, and later expanding to Japan and Brazil. The U.S. is one of Instagram's largest markets with more than 106 million users, according to data analyst EMarketer. "What we're hoping to do is depressurize Instagram a little bit, and make it a bit less of a competition," Instagram boss Adam Mosseri told Bloomberg after announcing the new test at a conference in San Francisco spons...

Facebook staff lamented ‘unethical’ practices but were rebuffed

Facebook Inc. employees repeatedly chafed at what they viewed as anti-competitive or unethical practices by the company, internal chats show. But their concerns, voiced in 2012 and 2013, were overruled by senior managers including Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg, who argued that the survival of the social network was more important. The messages come from a roughly 7,000-page trove of leaked documents that were part of a years-old lawsuit in the Bay Area’s San Mateo County. The interactions are likely to be scrutinized further as Facebook faces ongoing antitrust investigations. In multiple discussions found in the documents, employees, including some top executives, argued against policies that would cut off competitors’ ability to advertise on the platform and access Facebook...

Wall Street Journal: Facebook found emails that show its CEO was aware of privacy practices now under investigation. Facebook Inc. uncovered emails that seem to show Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg was aware of potentially problematic privacy practices at the company, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The social media giant discovered the emails in the process of responding to a federal privacy investigation, the Journal reported, raising concerns that it would be harmful to the company if they became public. The potential impact of the internal emails was part of the reason the company sought to reach a quick settlement of the investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, the Journal reported, citing one person ...

Tips on How to Make Your Video Go Viral

While doing research for this article, this writer found some pretty low-down stuff. Like, who are those people that title their videos suggestively, and inaccurately, might I add? Videos go viral for more reasons than that. Or, what about the accurate ones that are enough to make you queasy? I didn't watch those, by the way. I would hazard a guess and say that some of them were recorded under the influence of mind altering chemicals. So, is the New School Method of Cinematography? Get a camera, get stoned and get 9 million views!! In some cases, it seems to be true. Don't misunderstand, it's not acceptable in my philosophy to promote public intoxication. Besides, it's illegal. OK, that said, there are a few things that I have gleaned that I'm not repulsed to share. Here goes......

9 Twitter Tips From The Donald For Better Responses And Visibility

Whether you love him or hate him, you follow him. The Donald has figured out how to market himself, his calling, and his message on Twitter. Every mogul, guru, and marketing rep on the internet has succumbed to "The Donald Twit Fever" and those who haven't are burning with desire. A few weeks back I met a good friend at Glen Eyrie Castle for Tea, and we discussed her high-powered attempt to take down The Donald. She remained anti-Trump to the end, and it really got her no-where. Her infamous position may be envied by the few, and her name may be recognized as the one at the head of the Take-Down. But she failed. Totally and completely failed. Sure, she still has her high and mighty moral standing, but from the looks of the events surrounding the intake, cabinet appointments, and celebrat...
