The Do’s Of Planning And Creating Videos

YouTube started the revolution of video uploads online. People has gone crazy over this social media site and almost everyone has been uploading their own videos since. Today, it is one of the most prominent and most used by search engines. Its continuously growing influence in the purchase decisions of consumers is just one example of how video has become a more powerful tool for businesses now more than ever. However, merely creating and distributing a video about your business is simply not enough. Aside from other online and offline marketing strategies you can come up with, social media is still a powerful tool and capitalizing on video creation is one of the best tactics. If you're looking to invest in corporate video production, then you have to make sure that it will be useful to a...

Teenagers Can Often Spot Financial Struggles

Teenagers often know when their parents are having money problems − and that knowledge is linked to mental health challenges, new research finds. When parents try to shield their kids from financial hardship, they may be doing them a favor: Teens’ views about their families’ economic challenges are connected to their mental health and behavior. That’s the main finding of a study into household income and child development that I recently conducted with my colleagues. As a professor of psychology, I know there’s a good deal of research showing that young people who experience more household economic hardship tend to have more behavioral problems. But most studies on this issue rely heavily on caregiver reports – that is, what adults say about their kids. Fewer researchers have asked you...

The Importance Of Authentic Engagement For Black Travelers

Black travelers want authentic engagement, not checkboxes. After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, when travel brands – including Delta Air Lines, Hilton and Enterprise – pronounced their support for diversity and the Black Lives Matter movement, our research group was motivated to conduct a study that collected data of the travel experiences of more than 5,000 Black people and people of color. Our work, published in Afar magazine and Tourism Geographies, found that Black travelers expressed dissatisfaction with how the travel industry promotes itself as inclusive. Authenticity matters Black travelers want more genuine and authentic engagement and representation, we found, that showcases an investment in the Black community by partnering with Black-owned travel businesses, guides an...

For Some Nonreligious Americans Secular Congregations Fill A Need

Church without God: How secular congregations fill a need for some nonreligious Americans. Shared testimonies, collective singing, silent meditation and baptism rituals – these are all activities you might find at a Christian church service on a Sunday morning in the United States. But what would it look like if atheists were gathering to do these rituals instead? Today, almost 30% of adults in the United States say they have no religious affiliation, and only half attend worship services regularly. But not all forms of church are on the decline – including “secular congregations,” or what many call “atheist churches.” As a sociologist of religion who has spent the past 10 years studying nonreligious communities, I have found that atheist churches serve many of the same purposes as religio...

Balancing Your Home Life By Using Your Phone At Work

Using your phone at work can help to balance your home life – new research. You might not think twice about using your phone while you’re at work. Maybe you need to send a quick message to a family member or a friend, or catch up on the news. Then there’s that dental appointment which needs to be booked – and while you’re at it, you may as well get the online grocery shopping done. It’s all very convenient, and means plenty of domestic tasks can be crossed off the to-do list while you’re on company time. And it appears to be widespread. One survey suggests that employees use their phones for personal reasons for more than two hours during the average working day. But those hours add up. And with people reportedly checking their phones more than 100 times a day, some employers and companies...

The Long Racist History Of The Term ‘Voodoo’

How the word ‘voodoo’ became a racial slur. For decades, it has been common for people to throw around terms like “voodoo politics,” “voodoo economics,” “voodoo science” and “voodoo medicine” to reference something that they think is ridiculous, idiotic or fraudulent. Horror movies and crime shows often tell stories about evil “voodoo doctors” who terrorize their victims with black magic. Even Disney’s first movie with a Black princess, released in 2009, had a “voodoo doctor” as the villain. Unfortunately, these shows and movies promote myths about voodoo that reinforce more than a century of stereotypes and discrimination. In my 2023 book, “Voodoo: The History of a Racial Slur,” I argue that voodoo is an extremely problematic term with a deeply racist history. Most African diaspora r...

Black Lives Matter 100 Years Ago

100 years ago African-Americans marched down 5th Avenue to declare that black lives matter. The only sounds were those of muffled drums, the shuffling of feet and the gentle sobs of some of the estimated 20,000 onlookers. The women and children wore all white. The men dressed in black. On the afternoon of Saturday, July 28, 1917, nearly 10,000 African-Americans marched down Fifth Avenue, in silence, to protest racial violence and white supremacy in the United States. Silent protest parade in New York against the East St. Louis riots, 1917. Library of Congress New York City, and the nation, had never before witnessed such a remarkable scene. The “Silent Protest Parade,” as it came to be known, was the first mass African-American demonstration of its kind and marked a watershed moment in t...

Even If You Are Not Rich You Can Be A Cruise Ship Owner

You Can Be a Cruise Ship Owner Even If You Are Not Rich. Unlike fractional ownership of aircraft and houseboats, fractional owners of a cruise ship can all use the ship simultaneously. There is plenty of room for you and the other owners to live on the ship any time you want, or all the time. You can use it as a full-time residence, and so can the other co-owners. The first obvious benefit of shared ownership is acquisition cost. There are many cruise ships on the market in all price ranges, sizes, ages, and conditions. There are many smaller and older cruise ships available for less than one million dollars. At the lower end, some smaller cruise ships in fair condition can be acquired for about $250,000. At the highest end, the biggest new mega cruise ships now cost about $500 millio...

The Most Recent Crop Of Terms Added To The Dictionary

‘Thirst trap’ and ‘edgelord’ were recently added to the dictionary – so why hasn’t ‘nibling’ made the cut? A student in my graduate seminar recently mentioned seeing her “niblings” at Thanksgiving. Some of the students in my class were clearly familiar with the term. But others frowned, suggesting that they hadn’t heard the term before, or didn’t know what it meant. A nibling is the child of one’s brothers or sisters. The word is a blend of the “n” in “niece” and “nephew” with “sibling,” and it was coined in the early 1950s by linguist Samuel Martin. But even though it’s been around for over 70 years, the word isn’t included in the online Merriam-Webster dictionary. The most recent crop of terms added to the dictionary includes words like edgelord – a person who makes provocative statement...
