Contradicting NIMBY Concerns – Building Subsidized Low-Income Housing Actually Lifts Property Values In A Neighborhood

Building multiple publicly subsidized low-income housing developments in a neighborhood doesn’t lower the value of other homes in the area – and in fact can even increase their worth, according to a new peer-reviewed study I co-authored. For the study, we looked at 508 developments financed through the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program and built in the Chicago area from 1997 to 2016. We then examined their influence on more than 600,000 nearby residential sales, using data from local property assessments and tax records. We chose Chicago because of its size, well-established neighborhoods, substantial amount of subsidized housing developments, well-documented racial and ethnic segregation, pockets of persistent and concentrated poverty and excellent data coverage. While some r...

5 Concerns – Increased Hate – Crimes And Enabling?

If you haven't observed, we've been undergoing, a period of increased amounts/ numbers of hate - crimes, you probably haven't been paying enough attention! Many feel, this is occurring, at a rate, we haven't seen, in recent memory, and, this may be more dangerous, than - ever, because, so many politicians, and elected officials, seem to believe, enabling, and entitling the haters, etc, serves their personal/ political agenda, and/ or, self - interest! It has gotten to the point, where, common sense indicates, if we don't reduce this partisan behavior, hatred, bigotry, and prejudice, we risk the identity and character of this nation, and lose, many of what, we've considered the protections, and Constitutional guarantees, which differentiate us, throughout the world! When haters feel enabled...

Concerns About Privacy, Accuracy And Fairness Raises As Government Agencies Are Tapping A Facial Recognition Company To Prove You’re You

The U.S. Internal Revenue Service is planning to require citizens to create accounts with a private facial recognition company in order to file taxes online. The IRS is joining a growing number of federal and state agencies that have contracted with ID.me to authenticate the identities of people accessing services. The IRS’s move is aimed at cutting down on identity theft, a crime that affects millions of Americans. The IRS, in particular, has reported a number of tax filings from people claiming to be others, and fraud in many of the programs that were administered as part of the American Relief Plan has been a major concern to the government. The IRS decision has prompted a backlash, in part over concerns about requiring citizens to use facial recognition technology and in part over di...

Tesla Bot Raises Serious Concerns – But Probably Not The Ones You Think

Elon Musk announced a humanoid robot designed to help with those repetitive, boring tasks people hate doing. Musk suggested it could run to the grocery store for you, but presumably it would handle any number of tasks involving manual labor. Predictably, social media filled with references to a string of dystopian sci-fi movies about robots where everything goes horribly wrong. As troubling as the robot futures in movies like I, Robot, The Terminator and others are, it’s the underlying technologies of real humanoid robots – and the intent behind them – that should be cause for concern. Musk’s robot is being developed by Tesla. It’s a seeming departure from the company’s car-making business, until you consider that Tesla isn’t a typical automotive manufacturer. The so-called “Tesla Bot” ...

Raising More Concerns About Climate Change – A Record-Smasher, The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season

It was clear before the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season started that it was going to be busy. Six months later, we’re looking back at a trail of broken records, and the storms may still not be over even with the season’s official end on Nov. 30. This season had the most named storms, with 30, taking the record from the calamitous 2005 season that brought Hurricane Katrina to New Orleans. It was only the second time the list of storm names was exhausted since naming began in the 1950s. Ten storms underwent rapid intensification, a number not seen since 1995. Twelve made landfall in the U.S., also setting a new record. Six of those landfalling storms were hurricane strength, tying yet another record. Tropical storm tracks show how busy the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season was. Brian McNoldy, ...

Fort Worth cop who shot black woman in her home to be questioned as concerns are raised about use of force

The white Fort Worth police officer accused of shooting a black woman inside her home over the weekend has resigned, Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus announced Monday. Atatiana Jefferson, 28, was gunned down early Saturday by an officer who'd been summoned to her Fort Worth home to conduct a welfare check by a neighbor who reported seeing Jefferson's front door open. Bodycam footage released by police showed two officers canvassing the property before one shouted, "put your hands up, show me your hands," and fired through a window. Kraus on Monday identified the officer involved in the shooting as Aaron Dean. He said Dean was placed on detached duty and stripped of his badge and firearm after he was served with his written administrative complaint yesterday. "My intent was to meet with him t...

Big Data Storage Concerns

The past twenty years have brought an evolution from server-based applications to cloud platforms and technologies. Now, data warehousing and big data analytics are the emerging areas to pay attention too. The increasing need for on-demand services that support storage and computing resources has created a need for the cloud that will continue to grow as improvements are made. The transition is taking data from operational systems and moving it to decision support systems. Knowing the trends in cloud technologies can help create cost-effective ways to address data analytics and warehousing. Investing in Higher-Level Services Higher-level services are the managed services where a specific use case is directly handled by the cloud. When it comes to warehousing, many of the challenges arise f...

Facebook: No digital currency until regulator concerns addressed

Amid its privacy scandals, the company is drawing new criticism over its plans for a new cryptocurrency. Facebook Inc. won't launch Libra, the controversial cryptocurrency it's planning to build with dozens of partner firms, until regulators' concerns are fully addressed, according to the company's top executive on the project. David Marcus, who will appear before members of both houses of U.S. Congress to discuss the project this week, said Facebook will also get "appropriate approvals" before launching Libra. The cryptocurrency isn't intended to compete with countries' national currencies and won't interfere with central banks on monetary policy, Marcus said in testimony prepared for a July 16 hearing before the Senate Banking Committee. "The time between...
