Hack Attack Is Only Funny When It’s Bill The Cat!

We were hacked. Bet the thought of it gives you shivers. It sure did me, and more! As a web designer I use many tools to monitor my site and stats. I signed up for Google Webmaster Tools and was horrified to see a list of keywords that were pornographic AND not on my site. The first question, of course, was where on earth were these coming from. The next step was to go through every page on the server and check for files / folders that appear suspicious. My main site was fine. What was not fine were archived folders (2) outside of my main site. I downloaded one of the pages to view the code and saw that there was a script underneath. On further research (Google search) I discovered that these pages were simply jumping off points, due to the script, to actual pornographic sites. But ther...

Attack, Distract, Deny

Three Life Habits That Perpetuate Struggle, And The Solution That Transcends Them There are three common ways we tend to deal with difficulties in life: we may attack, or distract ourselves, or deny the reality of the situation. Attack is especially popular in modern society. We use attack as a form of defense. We may jump to our individual assumptions and interpretations of what has been said, and then take offense at what we interpret as a personal attack on us, our values or our truths. Instead of stepping back for objectivity, we launch into an attack of what we think happened or what we imagine the other saying. This hooks us into an endless cycle of conflict, both within and without. When some truth manages to penetrate our defenses, we may even deny the existence of actual evidence...

Pandemic Used By Cyber-Criminals To Attack Schools And Colleges

Nir Kshetri, University of North Carolina – Greensboro Cyberattacks have hit schools and colleges harder than any other industry during the pandemic. In 2020, including the costs of downtime, repairs and lost opportunities, the average ransomware attack cost educational institutions $2.73 million. That is $300,000 more than the next-highest sector – distributors and transportation companies. From Aug. 14 to Sept. 12, 2021, educational organizations were the target of over 5.8 million malware attacks, or 63% of all such attacks. Ransomware attacks alone impacted 1,681 U.S. schools, colleges and universities in 2020. Globally 44% of educational institutions were targeted by such attacks. I study cybercrime and cybersecurity. In my forthcoming book – set to be published in November 2021 –...

The Affordable Care Act Is Under Attack And May Cost You Free Preventive Health Care

Paul Shafer, Boston University and Alex Hoagland, Boston University Many Americans breathed a sigh of relief when the Supreme Court left the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in place following its third major legal challenge in June 2021. This decision left widely supported policies in place, like ensuring coverage regardless of preexisting conditions, coverage for dependents up to age 26 on their parents’ plan and removal of annual and lifetime benefit limits. But the hits keep coming. One of the most popular benefits offered by the ACA, free preventive care through many employer-based and marketplace insurance plans, is under attack by another legal domino, Kelley v. Becerra. As University of Michigan law professor Nicholas Bagley sees it, “this time, the law’s opponents stand a good chance o...

For The Attack On The Capitol – Don’t Blame Fox News

In the days following the attack on the Capitol, The New York Times, in its print edition, ran an op-ed titled “Yes, You Should Blame Fox For Whipping Up Radicals.” The Washington Post ran an article with the headline “Trump Couldn’t Have Incited Sedition Without the Help of Fox News.” But our analysis tells a different story. We studied the official YouTube channels of six U.S. cable news networks. We looked at cable news powerhouses CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. But we also focused on three fringe networks – Newsmax, One America News Network (OANN) and Blaze TV – that have a relatively homogeneous audience, relatively extreme opinions and limited reach. Our unique dataset – which consisted of all the comments made by viewers of those six networks from Nov. 3, the date of the presidential e...

Was New Jersey shooting anti-Semitic attack

Dead attackers identified themselves as Black Hebrew Israelites, a movement known to rail against whites and Jews. Fears that a deadly shooting at a Jewish market in Jersey City was an anti-Semitic attack mounted as authorities recounted how a man and woman deliberately pulled up in a stolen rental van and got out shooting. Mayor Steve Fulop said surveillance video of the attackers made it clear they targeted the kosher market, and he pronounced the bloodshed a hate crime against Jews, as did New York's mayor and governor. Investigators say the two dead attackers - who were thought to be a couple - identified themselves in the past as Black Hebrew Israelites, a movement whose members have been known to rail against whites and Jews, according to a law enforcement ...

Two sentenced to prison for Charlottesville attack on black man

Jacob Scott Goodwin and Alex Ramos sentenced to eight and six years for beating of DeAndre Harris. Two men have been sentenced to prison for beating of a black man at a far-right rally in Charlottesville last year, local media reported. Jacob Scott Goodwin and Alex Ramos were sentenced to eight and six years respectively on Thursday for the beating of DeAndre Harris at the Unite the Right rally in August 2017. The confrontation took place after a friend of Harris attempted to take a Confederate flag away from one of the marchers. Pictures and a video of Harris's beating by a group of white nationalists were shared widely online, leading to attempts to identify the perpetrators. Harris, 20, suffered a spinal injury and a broken arm in the attack, which took place in a car park close to a ...

Lawyers Turn to Activism as Civil Liberties Come Under Attack

A new generation of social justice attorneys has risen to defend against the hard-line policies of the Trump administration, from immigration and abortion access to voting and gender rights. To train a new generation of lawyers to fight for the rights of immigrants after the 2016 elections, Claire Thomas started an asylum clinic at the New York City law school where she taught. In Seattle, Michelle Mentzer retired five years early as an administrative law judge so she could volunteer as an attorney with the ACLU. And in Texas, Anna Castro traded her full-time job for contract work so she could prepare to attend law school to better serve her community. The country is seeing a wave of legal activism as attorneys and attorneys-to-be have risen to defend civil liberties from the polic...
