Big Apple Native Erin Moriarty Is The Apple Of Many Fans Eyes

With her blonde curls, pursing lips and fresh face, Big Apple native Erin Moriarty is the apple of many fans' eyes. Although her favorite book is Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, we’re more interested in the way she carries her rack, dating back to her bikini-clad turn in the slasher film Toy’s House (2013). After scoring recurring roles on the ABC dramedy Red Widow (2013) and the HBO mystery True Detective, the busy babe played Hope on Netflix’s Jessica Jones (2015). During the Marvel series, she gives viewers something to marvel at: namely her butt cheeks! Meanwhile, on the big screen, the skintastic actress was without clothes in Within (2016). Even though we couldn’t see her private parts, she thrilled audiences by flashing her flesh in the shower and strutting her stuff in a bl...

New Research Shows Apple’s Child Safety Feature Warnings Can Increase Risky Sharing

Bennett Bertenthal, Indiana University; Apu Kapadia, Indiana University, and Kurt Hugenberg, Indiana University Apple’s plan to roll out tools to limit the spread of child sexual abuse material has drawn praise from some privacy and security experts as well as by child protection advocacy groups. There has also been an outcry about invasions of privacy. These concerns have obscured another even more troublesome problem that has received very little attention: Apple’s new feature uses design elements shown by research to backfire. One of these new features adds a parental control option to Messages that blocks the viewing of sexually explicit pictures. The expectation is that parental surveillance of the child’s behavior will decrease the viewing or sending of sexually explicit photos, b...

If The Company Keeps Its Promises – Apple Can Scan Your Photos For Child Abuse And Still Protect Your Privacy

Mayank Varia, Boston University The proliferation of child sexual abuse material on the internet is harrowing and sobering. Technology companies send tens of millions of reports per year of these images to the nonprofit National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The way companies that provide cloud storage for your images usually detect child abuse material leaves you vulnerable to privacy violations by the companies – and hackers who break into their computers. On Aug. 5, 2021, Apple announced a new way to detect this material that promises to better protect your privacy. As a computer scientist who studies cryptography, I can explain how Apple’s system works, why it’s an improvement, and why Apple needs to do more. Who holds the key? Digital files can be protected in a sort o...

Should Apple Be In The Department of Justice’s Antitrust Crosshairs Along With Google

Google’s payments to Apple to promote its search engine in iPhones, iPads and Mac computers are at the center of the Department of Justice’s antitrust lawsuit against the tech giant. The suit alleges this creates a “continuous and self-reinforcing cycle of monopolization” by limiting which search engines consumers can use. But as someone who studies platform markets, competition and industry structure, I believe the agreement seems more like a damning indictment of Apple’s own potentially illegal business practices. Why Google needs Apple The Department of Justice alleges that Google pays Apple and other device-makers to set its search engine as the default “on billions of mobile devices and computers worldwide,” thus controlling how users access the internet. It’s true, Google is domin...

How Apple and Google will let your phone warn you if you’ve been exposed to the coronavirus

On April 10, Apple and Google announced a coronavirus exposure notification system that will be built into their smartphone operating systems, iOS and Android. The system uses the ubiquitous Bluetooth short-range wireless communication technology. There are dozens of apps being developed around the world that alert people if they’ve been exposed to a person who has tested positive for COVID-19. Many of them also report the identities of the exposed people to public health authorities, which has raised privacy concerns. Several other exposure notification projects, including PACT, BlueTrace and the Covid Watch project, take a similar privacy-protecting approach to Apple’s and Google’s initiative. So how will the Apple-Google exposure notification system work? As researchers who study secu...

Apple to raise iPhone 11 production by 10 percent

Suppliers have been told to increase production of the latest iPhone due to strong demand, the Nikkei Asian Review said. Apple Inc. has told suppliers to increase production of the latest iPhone 11 product line by as much as 10% to meet stronger-than-expected demand for the new handsets, the Nikkei Asian Review reported. The boost would add 7 million to 8 million units to the Cupertino, Calif.-based company’s smartphone production, the publication reported. The increase may validate Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook’s strategy of offering budget-conscious consumers less expensive models amid signs of a weakening economy, it said. Major improvements to the iPhone’s camera, including the addition of a new ultrawide camera for better architectural and tourist photo...
