Ann Petry: First African American Woman to Sell Over One Million Books

Ann Petry, the first African American female author to sell over one million copies of her book. Petry was born in 1911 in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, where her father and grandfather ran a drugstore. Petry loved to read and from the age of fourteen she knew she wanted to be a writer. She wrote poetry and short plays in high school, but after graduation she chose the safe route and enrolled in the pharmacy program at the University of Connecticut where she earned her PhG degree. Ann worked in the family business until she married in 1938 and moved to New York. The direction of Ann's life changed when she took her first job in the advertising department of an African American newspaper, The Amsterdam News. She later became a reporter and editor for the People's Voice, a weekly newspaper, w...

Toni Morrison the Most Enduring Literary Feminine and African American Voice

Toni Morrison was born Chloe Ardelia ( Anthony) Wofford  on February 18, 1931 in Lorain, Ohio, where her parents, migrants from the South, had moved to, to escape the problems of southern racism. Morrison is the second of four children, to, Ramah Willis and George Wofford,  migrant sharecroppers on both sides, both of whom came from sharecropping families who had moved North in pursuit of better living conditions in the early 1900s.  Her father's family, in particular, had faced a great deal of discrimination. Due to these bitter memories and the racial troubles he endured during his childhood, he maintained a strong distrust of whites throughout his lifetime. Morrison's parents instilled in her the value of group loyalty, which they believed was essential to surviving the harsh realitie...

The Outline of Whites’ Violence Vs Blacks’ Nonviolence in American History

Introduction Various dissatisfactions may result in protests in a community or a society. Religious, economical, societal and political concerns are amongst the most important factors which provoke different groups and classes to counter act against the status quo. Part III – Is The African American Community The Victim Of Failed Leadership?

As we have seen in Part I and II, the economic position of the African-American community is deteriorating instead of improving and dying instead of growing. The reason why this tragic decline is taking place stems from a lack of social consciousness and social cohesiveness. Social consciousness and social cohesiveness can only be achieved with intra-racial integration. It can not be achieved by any other means. Since 1865, not one African-American organization, group or religious body has deemed it necessary to advance the idea that African-Americans should integrate with themselves. This simple course of action has been neglected and intra-racial integration has been taken for granted. This oversight has plagued the African-American community for 142 years. For 142 years after slavery, ...

Part I – Is The African American Community The Victim Of Failed Leadership?

I can see it now, the Reverends Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton are outraged that someone has the nerve to call them inept. Ezine Articles might not even publish this article because they might be concerned about backlash from various publics, civil rights advocates and the far left liberal wing of the Democratic Party. If we can criticize our Presidents and our national leaders, surely we can examine the track record of those individuals that have been identified by media sources and our political parties as leaders in various communities without being fearful of reprisals or being labeled a racist. Before we can begin to understand how African-American leaders have failed their people, it will be necessary to define what is meant by lead, to which people I am referring and to what goal o...

Does African-American Literature Exist?

The question of what makes a piece of writing African American literature or not is one that I have never been confronted with before. I have certainly never been challenged to question the entire existence of the genre before taking a course entitled "ENGL 234: Major Writers in African American Literature". On the contrary, frequent evenings spent perusing bookstores have fortified the notion in my mind that the genre is alive and well. Other literature courses have not touched on this subject at all much less brought this question to light. Through that course, however, I found that it is certainly one worth exploring and one that deserves a definitive answer. I have come to understand the genre of African American literature as encompassing any piece of literature that deals specificall...

African-American Entrepreneurs: Online Affiliate Marketing As a Viable Way To Work From Home

The current economic crisis is being called the worst economy since the depression of 1930. While over-all unemployment continues to climb, African-Americans are experiencing job losses at nearly double the national rate, and this is expected to worsen as the condition of the economy declines. However, as more people lose traditional jobs, more and more business owners are being created. By becoming a business owner and working for yourself, you are at least gaining some control over your financial future, which is why more people are turning to home-based businesses for security. African-Americans, by and large, have always been a very entrepreneurial group. The statistics on new business startups are very encouraging. From 1997 until 2002, the number of black-owned businesses were up...

Digital Marketing Trends – Targeting the African-American Consumer

Do you plan to market or sell products and services to African-American consumers? If so, in order to successfully market to this community, it is to your advantage to understand certain digital marketing trends: how today's African-Americans shop, where they hang out, where they are most likely to be receptive to advertising and, more importantly, how they feel about marketing and media. It's been said that "2014 is going to be a killer year for social media and small business." It's also been said that properly implemented digital marketing strategies can help small businesses grow. So, what does this mean for small businesses that plan to primarily target Black American consumers? It means you need a realistic understanding of where Black consumers fit in this new media and cybercultur...

What In The World Is An African American Anyway?

By Kevin D. Moore This question was recently asked of me numerous times by White Americans, White Europeans, Black Americans, and others. The funny thing is that I have wondered this too. However, the interesting part about this question is the fact that people are asking it in the first place. When I think about it, something must not be right. I don't recall ever hearing anyone ask what is an Italian American or German American. So why would anyone ask what is an African American? I think the first aspect of my wonderment is that I can't seem to figure out how or when I (a year long tan American) stopped being identified as a Black American and started being identified as an African American. I'm sure someone has the answer. Unfortunately, it is a little fuzzy to me and it seems to...
