Once Again, Megan Miranda Has Crafted The Perfect Summer Thriller

The summer after a wealthy young summer guest dies under suspicious circumstances, her best friend lives under a cloud of grief and suspicion in this “clever, stylish mystery that will seize readers like a riptide” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) featuring “dizzying plot twists and multiple surprise endings” (The New York Times Book Review). Littleport, Maine, has always felt like two separate towns: an ideal vacation enclave for the wealthy, whose summer homes line the coastline; and a simple harbor community for the year-round residents whose livelihoods rely on service to the visitors. Typically, fierce friendships never develop between a local and a summer girl—but that’s just what happens with visitor Sadie Loman and Littleport resident Avery Greer. Each summer for almost a de...

The US Again Gets To Choose How It Stops Fighting In Afghanistan

Thomas Alan Schwartz, Vanderbilt University As headlines proclaim the “end” of “America’s longest war,” President Joe Biden’s withdrawal of the remaining U.S. military personnel from Afghanistan is being covered by some in the news media as though it means the end of the conflict – or even means peace – in Afghanistan. It most certainly does not. For one thing, the war is not actually ending, even if the U.S. participation in it is dwindling. Afghan government forces, armed and equipped with U.S. supplies – at least for the moment – will continue to fight the Taliban. Disengagement from an armed conflict is common U.S. practice in recent decades – since the 1970s, the country’s military has simply left Vietnam, Iraq and now Afghanistan. But for much of the country’s history, Americans w...

Maya Hawke Is At It Again

Singer, songwriter, actress, and daughter of two super famous hot people, Maya Hawke is at it again. As Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke's daughter, this beauty is a natural on-screen and a natural looker, too. She's also incredibly naturally talented. She has been releasing music videos featuring her original music and her latest "Generous Heart" is just as good as everything else that she's released. The music video was released as a preview for her debut album and the tender song is accompanied by a very tender look at Maya wearing barely anything at all. She's the most gorgeous thing in this scenic scene where she rings out her clothes at a waterfall. That means that she really isn't wearing her clothes. Maya Hawke plays herself, a forlorn lady with big blue eyes and a sensual pout, as she...

Americans Yet Again Have Trouble Understanding What Multiracial Means With Kamala Harris

News that Sen. Kamala Harris was Joe Biden’s choice for the 2020 Democratic vice presidential nominee drove speculation and argumentation about her identity. The big question appeared to be, “Is Kamala Harris truly African American?” There were numerous articles and opinion pieces about whether Harris can legitimately claim to be African American; the authenticity of her Black identity if she has an Indian mother; what it means for her to be biracial; and other articles opining and speculating about her racial, ethnic and even national identity. Harris, the daughter of immigrant parents from Jamaica and India, identifies as Black/African American while also embracing her Indian heritage. Yet the questions in social media and news outlets swirling around her identities demonstrate a conti...

Airlines got travelers comfortable about flying again once before – but 9/11 and a virus are a lot different

The U.S. airline industry has generally faced two obstacles in enticing more people to fly: fear and fares. Before the novel coronavirus, few feared flying thanks to the extreme rarity of airline crashes in the U.S., and domestic inflation-adjusted fares that were about the lowest ever. As a result, a record 811 million people flew within the U.S. in 2019. Today, fares are at rock bottom, but Americans’ fear of flying may be the highest it’s ever been, as the risk of sitting in an enclosed space with several hundred strangers – seemingly the perfect conditions for an infectious disease – is making most people avoid the skies. Passenger traffic plummeted 95% in April from a year earlier and remains significantly lower than normal. As an aviation historian, I feel a bit of deja vu. Almost...

Vigilantism, again in the news, is an American tradition

It’s a contentious time in the U.S., with a pandemic, racial equality, police violence and a presidential election all occupying people’s attention. Given all that stress, it can seem like people are taking the law into their own hands more often. In recent weeks, there have been confrontations over removing monuments to the Confederacy, clashes over the use of face masks, attempts to protect – or intimidate – Black Lives Matter protesters and even a renewed interest in “citizen’s arrests.” Some of these events have turned tragically violent and deadly. These events show Americans moving beyond differences of opinion and free speech into private displays of force. Their participants may be trying to enforce their own ideas of what the law is, or protect property or defend their communiti...

Land loss has plagued black America since emancipation – is it time to look again at ‘black commons’ and collective ownership?

Underlying the recent unrest sweeping U.S. cities over police brutality is a fundamental inequity in wealth, land and power that has circumscribed black lives since the end of slavery in the U.S. The “40 acres and a mule” promised to formerly enslaved Africans never came to pass. There was no redistribution of land, no reparations for the wealth extracted from stolen land by stolen labor. June 19 is celebrated by black Americans as Juneteenth, marking the date in 1865 that former slaves were informed of their freedom, albeit two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Coming this year at a time of protest over the continued police killing of black people, it provides an opportunity to look back at how black Americans were deprived of land ownership and the economic power that it bring...

Trump Effect STRIKES AGAIN: Walmart Shopper Assaults Hispanic Employee With Vile Racist Rant

A customer at a Wal-Mart in Irving, Texas, saw fit to casually share his racist views about Hispanic people (who he referred to as “foreigners”) with a female Hispanic employee trying to help him. The employee, an immigrant from El Salvador who became a U.S. Citizen 20 years ago, felt it necessary to take her phone and record a racist tirade from a white male customer being directed at her and an African-American customer. In the video, the man can be heard telling the employee that people like her need to “go to your own countries” and fix their problems there. “It has hurt me a lot because we are working people. We pay our taxes. We have children who study in college,” said Adela, who spoke on the condition that only her first name be used because she is concerned for her well-being. Ad...
