A Computer Scientist Explains – Why ‘Bad’ Ads Appear On ‘Good’ Websites

Sketchy ads, like those for miracle weight loss pills and suspicious-looking software, sometimes appear on legitimate, well-regarded websites. It turns out that most websites don’t actually decide who gets to show ads to their viewers. Instead, most sites outsource this task to a complex network of advertising tech companies that do the work of figuring out which ads are shown to each particular person. The online ad ecosystem is largely built around “programmatic advertising,” a system for placing advertisements from millions of advertisers on millions of websites. The system uses computers to automate bidding by advertisers on available ad spaces, often with transactions occurring faster than would be possible manually. Programmatic advertising is a powerful tool that allows advertiser...

Even If It Happened To Someone Who Is White – People Are More Likely To React To A Black Person’s Story Of Injustice

People appear more willing to boycott a retailer in response to a video message about a consumer’s experience of injustice while shopping when the narrator is Black, even when the source of the actual information is from a white person, according to research I conducted with several colleagues that’s currently under peer review. We wanted to observe whether and how the race of the person telling a story of racial injustice affects the reaction of their audience. So we conducted three studies that manipulated details about the race of the storyteller and victim to isolate the role the storyteller’s race plays. In the first study, we recruited 370 white male participants using a crowdsourced academic research panel. We asked them to watch a video in which a professional male actor portrayi...

Resin, Metal, Or Concrete Gardens Statues – The Pros And Cons

Garden sculptures can be made from nearly any durable material.  The most popular are concrete, resin, and metal.  Here are some things you should know about each. Concrete garden statues:  Because these are made from molds, you can get nearly any size, shape, or style of this type of statue that you would like.  Concrete statues are sold in both finished and unfinished styles.  It is very affordable and if you buy unfinished and paint it yourself then it is even more so. One thing you should know about concrete garden statuary is that it can get very heavy, very quickly.  If you live in a high wind area this is great, but be sure that you have help moving big pieces.  The only real downside is that concrete is not as detailed as resin. Resin garden statues:  Resin is a hard plastic mat...

A Toxic, Dog-Eat-Dog Workplace Atmosphere That Discourages Women Brought On By An Emphasis On Brilliance

Workplaces that emphasize brilliance are perceived to have a masculine work culture that undermines gender diversity, according to a new investigation I conducted with colleagues Andrei Cimpian, Melis Muradoglu and George Newman. We wanted to understand why women are underrepresented in fields that prize raw intellectual talent – what some people call “brilliance.” This includes many academic disciplines, such as philosophy, mathematics and economics, and industries like information technology. Despite the stereotype equating brilliance with men, women’s continued underrepresentation in these fields is not due to gender differences in intellectual ability. For instance, girls are about half of the gifted student population in the U.S. Why do fewer women go on to enter these professions? ...

Gossip Gets A Bad Rap – The Science Of Gossip

Gossip gets a bad rap. There’s no doubt that the act of gossiping about someone can sometimes be damaging and negative. But there is such a thing as “good gossip” and the very act of gossiping can actually help the way we interact with each other. If we follow some simple steps we can take part in gossip without it ending in tears. Gossip is defined as talking about and evaluating someone when they aren’t there. But we can use gossip to learn about the rules of behavior in social groups and get closer to each other. It helps us do this by letting us learn important information without the need to actually talk to every group member. So gossiping is efficient and those who gossip can use this social currency to gain positions of power. But being a gossip also has a dark side. Gossips are ...

What To Know About CBD Products’ Safety

While just a few years ago, CBD oil and infused products were specialty items orderable primarily online, they are now filling shelves at local pharmacies. We hope you love these items as much as we did! GateHouse Media may collect a share of sales from links on this page. The acronym CBD dominates today’s headlines, billboards and advertisements. CVS, in fact, plans a rollout of CBD products in over 800 stores, reported NBC News in March. CBD, or cannabidiol, is just one of the compounds found in hemp, a variety of the cannabis plant. CBD oil is considered nonpsychoactive, essentially defined as not affecting the mind or mental processes. Projectcbd.org offers this explanation: “CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) have similar molecular structures, but CBD does not directly stimulate CB1 a...

How To Give Up Soda In 3 Steps

Six states have imposed a soda tax to try to curb excess consumption, while more states are jumping on the nutritional governance bandwagon Americans love soda. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists sugar-sweetened beverages as the leading source of added sugars in Americans’ diets. Even sugar-free sodas are an unhealthy addition to diets because of artificial sweeteners like aspartame, cyclamate, saccharin, acesulfame-k or sucralose, pointed out healthline.com in May 2018. The CDC informs, “Frequently drinking sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with weight gain/obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney diseases, non-alcoholic liver disease, tooth decay and cavities, and gout, a type of arthritis.” Regarding sugar-free soda, healthline.com’s report expla...

How Youth Have Changed The Climate Movement

“We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors. We borrow it from our children,” affirms the Oglala-Sioux version of a belief common to several indigenous cultures. To David Brower, the “archdruid” founder of Friends of the Earth, and other environmentalists, “stealing it from our children” better characterizes modern humans’ degradation of the earth. The only hope, Brower declared nearly 50 years ago, is “what young people can do before older people tell them it’s impossible.” The youth-led climate strikes in September that drew some 4 million marchers worldwide demand a far broader concept of democracy if the environmental goals they advocate are to be won. The climate-strike revolution represents a huge new step for human rights that expands hierarchical oppressions to include the dim...

Your Dog’s Love For You And Its Nose Knows No Bounds

I have discovered one positive amid the pandemic: I love working with two dogs at my feet. As someone who studies dog cognition, I often wonder: What is Charlie learning when he stops to sniff the crisp fall air? What is Cleo thinking when she stares at me while I write? Are my dogs happy? I’m not alone in finding myself suddenly spending more time with my pups and contemplating what’s on their minds. More people in the U.S. are working from home now than are working in the workplace, and many now share home offices with their canine companions. What’s more, many are finding their lives enriched with the addition of a new pet, as people started adopting dogs at massive rates during the pandemic. This uptick in dog time means I have been fielding questions from new and experienced dog ow...
