The Myth Of One-Night Stands And Long-Term Relationships – Mating Market Theory

Popular wisdom and established evolutionary science hold that the sexes seek fundamentally different relationships: men want short-term, no-strings-attached relationships whereas women value longer-term, loyal partnerships. The explanation generally comes down to biological differences between men and women. Because women invest more in reproduction than men do – think pregnancy, morning sickness and stretchmarks – being picky becomes important because choosing poorly can be costly, even devastating. However, for men, reproduction may only entail a brief sexual liaison and a bit of sperm – there are potentially no long-term costs. This calculus has been built into our psychology, many argue. Think about it more carefully, though. Where do all the women sleeping with these guys come from? S...

People Post ‘Couple Photos’ As Their Social Media Profile Pictures – Why Is That?

As you scroll through your Facebook news feed, you see it: Your friend has posted a new profile picture. But instead of a picture of just your friend, it’s a couple photo – a picture of your friend and their romantic partner. “Why would someone choose that as their profile picture?” you wonder. We are social psychology researchers interested in understanding people’s behavior in close relationships and on social media. Our research and that of other scholars provides insight into why people use these types of “I’m part of a couple!” displays on social media. Choosing profile photos that include their romantic partner, posting their relationship status and mentioning their partner in their updates can all be signs of how people feel in their relationship – and may send an important message ...

A 4-Step Maintenance Plan To Help Keep Your Relationship Going Strong

Early on, relationships are easy. Everything is new and exciting. You go on dates, take trips, spend time together and intentionally cultivate experiences that allow your relationship to grow. Then, somewhere along the way, life happens. There’s a little work involved in happily ever after. Désirée Fawn/Unsplash, CC BY One study on married couples in their 30s and 40s found that their marital quality declined over the course of a year, in terms of love, passion, satisfaction, intimacy and commitment. Too often, people shrug their shoulders and convince themselves this is just how it goes. Switching to relationship autopilot feels justifiable when you’re short on time, low on energy and must focus on other priorities like careers and kids. This is when doubt can creep in and tempt you to h...

Ghosts Of Romantic Pasts Are So Tough To Exorcise For Some

A friend once grumbled that, given the choice, she’d rather see her ex miserable than herself happy. Few things in life are as traumatic as the end of a long-term, romantic relationship. Nonetheless, many people are able to eventually recover and move on relatively unscathed. Others, like my friend, aren’t so lucky. Even years later, they remain mired in the pain of the experience. Any reminder of their former partner – whether it’s a casual mention in conversation or a Facebook photo – can elicit profound feelings of sadness, anger and resentment. Why is it that some people continue to be haunted by the ghosts of their romantic pasts, struggling to let go of the pain of rejection? In new research, my colleague Carol Dweck and I found that rejection actually makes some people redefine them...

Your Relationship Status Tallies With How Well You Sleep Survey Shows

A new survey of Australian adults has found your relationship status can impact how well you sleep. We know based on previous research that sleeping next to someone can help you sleep better – but this is the first study to look at how the type of relationship you’re in might impact your sleep. We found that people who live with a regular partner tend to fall asleep faster than people who have occasional or casual partners, or who are single. It’s not all bad news for people who aren’t in an ongoing relationship though – the amount of sleep people got overnight wasn’t related to relationship status. Perchance to dream and stay healthy It’s generally recommended you should get seven to nine hours of sleep a night. However, about 40% of Australians report inadequate sleep. Not getting enoug...

Here’s What To Look Out For On Dating Apps – ‘Sextortion’ Leads To Financial Losses And Psychological Trauma

When malicious internet users gain people’s trust to obtain sexually explicit photos or videos, and then use these materials – specifically the threat of sharing them – to coerce them for sexual, personal or financial gain, this is called “sextortion”. Recent incidents of sextortion are not entirely surprising given the increase in social interactions online during lockdowns, particularly by way of online dating. But they are concerning. Being a victim of sextortion is associated with significant financial losses (sextortion cost Americans US$8 million over the first seven months of 2021, for example) as well as trauma. Perpetrators of sextortion could be strangers who want to exploit vulnerable young children or adolescents. They could be former romantic partners or members of organised...

While each story is unique, there are common factors, and some wider lessons to learn. The Tinder Swindler is a powerful example of what can go wrong, but what does it teach us about romance fraud, and how can you avoid becoming the next victim? What is romance fraud? Romance fraud...

Sometimes finding an emo soul mate is a real pain. Depending on the area that you live in, the emo population can be slim to none. So, where should single emo girls go to meet single emo guys? Well, here are a few ideas. #1.) School Whether it be high school or college, there are bound to be a few single emo guys roaming around the campus. And what better place to get a good feel for a guy than somewhere that you see him every day. #2.) The Mall By far the second largest, and sometimes even the largest, concentration of emo guys can be found at the mall. This is a single emo girls haven for, at the very least, some really nice eye candy. I have yet to go to the mall and not spot at least one hottie walking around with his besties. And if you're lucky, his besties will be hotties too. ...
