Asexuals — How They Navigate Romantic Relationships

How asexuals navigate romantic relationships. Though an estimated 1% of people identify as asexual – a sexual orientation most commonly defined as lacking sexual attraction – asexual people remain relatively invisible and are rarely researched. For these reasons, they’re frequently subjected to discrimination and stereotyping. For example, it’s often assumed that all people who are asexual are also “aromantic” – that they aren’t interested in being in romantic relationships or aren’t capable of doing so. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Asexuality exists on a spectrum, and there is a wide range in how the members of this group experience sexuality and romance. In a recently published study that I conducted with several Michigan State faculty members and other research asso...

Do Smart Chatbots Such As ChatGPT Make Dating Online Better Or Worse?

ChatGPT and Tinder: do smart chatbots make dating online better or worse? Tinder and other dating apps have come to define modern dating, and notoriously so. Users download the Tinder app to their phones or other devices and can then view the profiles of potential dates nearby. If they think someone might be a match, they swipe to the right on their touchscreens to show interest. If the other person swipes right too, a chat can begin, which might lead to an in-person meeting. This initial introduction involves minimal information – a photo and some basic details about yourself. The result is that romance and trust are sometimes assumed to be missing from the dating process. Added to this are fears of harassment and scams as well as uninspirational (and often sexually aggressive) Tinder ope...

Defriending In Our Broader, Offline Social Lives

Ditching a friend who is not like you can deepen social inequality. Since the 2016 presidential election, news accounts and scientific research have illustrated how defriending, a term originally associated with dropping Facebook friends, echoes in our broader, offline social lives. And what may seem like a simple decision to cut off a difficult relationship may actually deepen divisions in society. As social scientists who study social networks, we were keen to take a closer look at defriending beyond social media and the internet, particularly as the U.S. approaches what is likely to be another contentious presidential election. Some relationships are difficult to keep going because of conflicts, disagreements, life changes or busy schedules. Those things make defriending practical and r...

College Educated Black Singles Embrace Life Without Marriage

Black singles with college education embrace life without marriage. Why is it seemingly OK to ask single people “Why are you single?” when married people are rarely asked “Why are you married?” Sociologist Kris Marsh hopes to break this double-standard with her new book “The Love Jones Cohort: Single and Living Alone in the Black Middle Class.” In it, she examines the lifestyles of single people and explores the stigma that can come with their decision to not marry. What’s the story behind the title? My mentor and I coined the expression “The Love Jones Cohort” over coffee on a hot and humid summer day in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. We were discussing how my idea to study Black middle class men and women who are single and living alone came from both media and my own life experiences. ...

After A Breakup Who Keeps The Engagement Ring? Why You Might Want A Prenup For Your Diamond

Who keeps the engagement ring after a breakup? 2 law professors explain why you might want a prenup for your diamond. When Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck got engaged the first time, in 2002, he gave her a very pricey ring. That engagement ring was reportedly worth as much as $2.5 million, made by luxury jeweler Harry Winston and adorned with a 6.1-carat pink diamond. After the movie stars broke up in 2004 without getting married, J. Lo said she intended to return the ring “quietly” to Affleck. Whether or she ever did that or not, was Lopez entitled to keep the that rock or any of the others she got from her numerous ex-husbands and former fiancés? The answer can matter to anyone who is engaged, married – or even thinking about tying the knot. No one knows for sure how many engagements end ...

A Rose By Any Other Color

Giving a rose to someone you love can be very special, however if you happen to choose the wrong color of rose, the message you send can turn disastrous. With so many different rose colors, all meaning different things, it can be hard to know what to give to a friend, relative or spouse without sending a mixed message. If you only want to go by the old standby of a red rose, then there is little else to think about. However, if you are adventurous, you can give rose of a different color. Here is what each of the main rose colors mean. We all know that a red rose signifies love. Any husband who has had to stop at a flower shop on his way home to say sorry for a real, or imaginary, transgression towards his spouse, knows that when all else fails, it is the best way to go. Red roses are the...

Star Sign Compatibility

The Secrets of Star Sign Compatibility. For a long time I had on my website detailed descriptions of the compatibilities between the twelve star signs. I even gave them star ratings. The relationship between Aquarius and Cancer got one star, between Aries and Capricorn three stars and between Virgo and Capricorn five. Looking at the traffic to my website, it was clear that most of my visitors wanted to know about their love life, and in particular their compatibility with their real or hoped-for partners. While I was grateful for this traffic, it seemed out of balance and didn't reflect what I wanted to concentrate on. I therefore changed the website, and took down all the pages about star signs and compatibility. That doesn't mean to say that I am not interested in star signs and ro...

The “36 Questions Of Love” That Have Taken The Dating World By Storm

Do those viral ‘36 questions’ actually lead to finding love? The “36 questions of love” have taken the dating world by storm. First published in 1997 as part of scientific research into relationships, the 36 questions of love gained global popularity through Mandy Len Catron’s viral 2015 New York Times essay “To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This”. In that essay, she outlines how she used the 36 questions with a university acquaintance on a casual night out. The result was the two fell in love, not dissimilar to two research participants who took part in the study back in 1997. In the publishing of that essay, a phenomenon was born. Social media, dating websites, dating coaches and bloggers were posting, writing or discussing the 36 questions of love – often framing these questions as a sur...

Social Prescribing Can Treat The Loneliness Making Us Physically Sick

Loneliness is making us physically sick, but social prescribing can treat it – podcast. Social isolation and loneliness are increasingly becoming societal problems, as they contribute to polarization and affect our physical health. Mental health professionals, community advocates and health-care providers have been raising the alarm about this impending crisis. The pandemic may have exacerbated social isolation and the subsequent feelings of loneliness, but it did not invent it. In 2018, two years before the pandemic, the United Kingdom created a ministerial portfolio for loneliness. Japan, where nearly 40 per cent of the population report experiencing loneliness, began a similar position in 2021. In this episode of The Conversation Weekly podcast, we speak to three researchers who invite...
