Life In Gangs Today Differs Drastically From When The ‘West Side Story’ Jets And Sharks Ruled The Streets

The songs are timeless, the casting contemporary and dance routines still daring. But for social scientists like us, Steven Spielberg’s remake of the 1961 hit musical “West Side Story” – a film about two rival street gangs – is more than a 21st-century face-lift of a Broadway classic. Released in theaters on Dec. 10, 2021, it is an opportunity to consider societal changes in the six decades since Maria and Tony stole the hearts of audiences across the world – particularly in the world of gangs. As scholars who have studied gang culture, we find that the soul of the street gang hasn’t changed much since the days of the Jets and the Sharks – but the world around them has. Demographics, economics, technology and public policy have reshaped and reshuffled gang life in America. So dramatic ar...

It’s Not The Whole Story But Safety Net Policies Are Helping Reduce The Number Of Americans Below The Poverty Line

On The Record Elena Delavega, University of Memphis CC BY-ND The share of Americans living in poverty shrank to an estimated 9.2% in 2020, according to the Urban Institute, a think tank that closely tracks this rate with a widely used model. There were 29.3 million Americans living below the poverty line, the institute’s researchers found. Another 10.3 million appear to have been kept out of poverty through government efforts to cushion the blows from massive economic upheaval triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. This new estimate contradicts many prior predictions and is significantly lower than the 10.5% of the U.S. population the U.S. Census Bureau said was in poverty in 2019, the most recent official data available. If confirmed when the government agency releases official 2020 numbe...

America’s First Known Black Master Distiller – The Story Of Nearest Green

On The Record Stefanie Benjamin, University of Tennessee When you hear the name Jack Daniel, whiskey probably comes to mind. But what about the name Nathan “Uncle Nearest” Green? In 2016, The New York Times published a story about the distiller’s “hidden ingredient” – “help from a slave.” In the article, the brand officially acknowledged that an enslaved man, Nearest Green, taught Jack Daniel how to make whiskey. Since then, scholars, researchers and journalists have descended upon Lynchburg, Tennessee, hoping to learn more about a man who, until then, had appeared as a mere appendage in the story of the country’s most popular whiskey brand. As a scholar of tourism whose research involves highlighting marginalized populations and counternarratives, I followed these developments with k...

Damon Young Tells His Story in “What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker”

I think that we should all know by now that trying to do or alter our behavior in a way to appease Whites is useless. Damon Young’s is the voice many Black people probably hear in their heads. The one that finds humor in the most-distressing situations. The one that has the perfect, witty clapback to some ridiculous statement. And the one that is thoughtful to the point of overthinking. I think this because every time I read one of his posts on Very Smart Brothas—a blog he cofounded about relationships, pop culture, and race—I excitedly exclaim, “Oh my God, I was thinking the exact same thing!” And based on the plethora of comments at the end of each blog post, I know I’m not the only one. Reading his recently published memoir, What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker,...

Logan Paul has returned to YouTube with a video about his own redemption story

Logan Paul’s return to YouTube was inevitable. Sure, he had vlogged the dead body of a suicide victim, a video that grotesquely proved the troubling thesis about YouTube culture that everything, eventually, can and will become someone’s viral content. Three weeks after apologizing for the video, losing his access to YouTube’s premium ad program and seeing his future projects with YouTube’s subscription service put on hold, Paul posted a new video on his vlogging channel on Wednesday, which has 16 million subscribers. It’s called: “Suicide: Be Here Tomorrow.” The tone of Paul’s vlogs are normally that of a frat boy with a new puppy. His newest video, like his other videos, focuses squarely on Paul’s thoughts, experiences and feelings, but that’s where the similarities end. Inst...

The Story Behind Hip Hop Drum Beats by James Z. Robinson

Nowadays hip hop is more than just drum beats, producers also use baselines and melodies in order to make beats. But it all started with the drums, for which hip hop music is known the most. Disc jockeys used to sample and isolate drums from music tracks, mostly from soul and funk music, to make their own, new sound. This was popular in the 80's, when people gathered together on block parties and used to dance on these new drum beats. Later on, the Djs started to scratch, put instrument sounds and vocals on their beats. The result was a new music genre named hip hop. The hip hop music went through a lot of changes, but the drums are still the heart of this genre. Even big producers still work with drum machines and MPCs, like Kanye West for example. And the result is very good! It'...
