Remembering Those Strange And Unique Comic Book Ads From When I Was A Kid

Do you remember sitting in the drug store and reading comic books when you were a kid? Do you remember becoming totally absorbed as you read an adventure that found Uncle Scrooge fighting off his arch-enemies the Beagle Boys in some remote jungle of South America? Or did you prefer reading Superman or Batman? Maybe your favorite stories were about the caped crusader rushing out of the bat cave (accompanied by Robin, Boy Wonder) to save Gotham City from some wicked and nefarious plan conjured up by the Joker or the Penguin? Man I loved reading comic books. Not only did the comic book publishers back then try to entertain us, many of them also tried to sell us things. Most of the comic books in the '50s and early '60s were filled with advertisements --- ads aimed at kids. I remember o...

Remembering The Facebook Poke

What Does It Mean to Poke Someone On Facebook? Facebook has a function called poking. You will find it on the left hand side underneath the picture of the friend you wish to poke. You simply need to click on the word "Poke FirstName". Facebook will let you know what you have done just in case you clicked the button by accident. You are about to poke Donald. He will be informed of this on his home page. What is poking and what does it mean? Remember when you were a kid and you used to poke someone to get their attention? Well there are two points of view about poking on Facebook. Of course those who like and those who don't! Facebook poking can be just a simple hello, Hi I was thinking about you and just wanted to let you know. The person who dropped by your house when you were not hom...

5 Things I’ve Learned Remembering Martin Luther King Jr. And Curating The MLK Collection At Morehouse College

For the past 11 years, civil rights historian Vicki Crawford has worked as the director of the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection, where she oversees the archive consisting of iconic sermons, speeches, writings and other materials belonging to King. Few archives of historical papers compare with the importance of the Morehouse King Collection. Aside from King’s life, the collection chronicles many of the major events that occurred during the civil rights movement. Since joining Morehouse, Crawford says she especially enjoys introducing younger generations to King and helping them understand the powerful lessons of the struggle for social justice, particularly how everyday people organized and worked for social change. Of the countless things she has seen, read and learn...

Remembering More By Reading – Especially Print – Than From Audio Or Video

During the pandemic, many college professors abandoned assignments from printed textbooks and turned instead to digital texts or multimedia coursework. As a professor of linguistics, I have been studying how electronic communication compares to traditional print when it comes to learning. Is comprehension the same whether a person reads a text onscreen or on paper? And are listening and viewing content as effective as reading the written word when covering the same material? The answers to both questions are often “no,” as I discuss in my book “How We Read Now,” released in March 2021. The reasons relate to a variety of factors, including diminished concentration, an entertainment mindset and a tendency to multitask while consuming digital content. Print versus digital reading When rea...

Remembering Nobel Prize-Winning Chemist Mario Molina, Who Pushed Mexico On Clean Energy, Face Masks

Dr. Mario Molina, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who died on Oct. 7 at age 77, did not become a scientist to change the world; he just loved chemistry. Born in Mexico City in 1943, Molina as a young boy conducted home experiments with contaminated water just for the fun of it. But Molina came to understand the political importance of his work on atmospheric chemistry and ozone layer depletion, which won him the Nobel in 1995, along with Paul J. Crutzen and F. Sherwood Rowland. Getting that surprise call from Sweden completely changed how he saw his role in the world, Molina said in 2016. He felt a responsibility to share his knowledge of clean energy, air quality and climate change broadly and to push decision-makers to use that information to protect the environment. As a Mexican, Dr...

Remembering Our History of Racial Injustice Through Soil

The Equal Justice Initiative is using soil to document the lynchings of more than 4,400 African-descended people between 1877 and 1950. In July 1898, a Black ice cream vendor by the name of John Henry James was accused of assaulting a White woman just west of Charlottesville, Virginia. He was dragged off a moving train by an angry mob, hanged from the branch of a locust tree near the train tracks, and shot multiple times. This past summer, 120 years later, John Henry James was taken on a pilgrimage from Charlottesville to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama, which memorializes the victims of racial violence in the United States. James, symbolically represented by a jar filled with soil collected at the site of his lynchi...

Moving Forward While Remembering the Past and Embracing the Future

Moving Forward While Remembering the Past and Embracing the Future. I have realized that the best step to take when trying to move forward in life is to accept that sometimes we have to let go of the life we expected to have and to start living the life we are given. Looking back on our past is not always a bad thing. For me, taking an honest look at my past helps me understand more of who I want to see myself become in the future. I believe if I didn't remember past experiences during my life, I would not learn what truly were my mistakes and successes. I know that most of the time, I am my own worst critic and set unrealistic expectations for my life. But now that I understand this about myself, I can work on this aspect and continue to remember not to be so hard on myself. I have...
