Accessory Or Necessity? Here’s Why You Can No Longer Afford To Ignore Influencer Marketing

With media figureheads like Lynne Franks recently speaking out about the ‘burn-out’ in the influencer marketing world, many brands are being cautious about embracing the industry’s potential. But with predictions that this rapidly-growing sector could be worth $10 billion by next year and 82% of consumers saying they were ‘very likely’ to act on the recommendation of an influencer they follow, can we really afford to ignore this ever-evolving age of marketing? Brands who don’t see influencers as a necessary marketing tool will find themselves on the back foot in our increasingly digitally-driven world, believes Amelia Neate, who runs the East Midlands-based Influencer Matchmaker agency. Her team partners brands with authentic and leading influencers across the globe and has worked with ...

Try These 6 Underprescribed Lifestyle Medicines For A Better, Longer Life But They Don’t Come As Pills

The majority of Americans are stressed, sleep-deprived and overweight and suffer from largely preventable lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. Being overweight or obese contributes to the 50% of adults who suffer high blood pressure, 10% with diabetes and additional 35% with pre-diabetes. And the costs are unaffordable and growing. About 90% of the nearly $4 trillion Americans spend annually for health care in the U.S. is for chronic diseases and mental health conditions. But there are new lifestyle “medicines” that are free that doctors could be prescribing for all their patients. Lifestyle medicine is the clinical application of healthy behaviors to prevent, treat and reverse disease. More than ever, research underscores that the “pills” today’s physici...

Is Major League Baseball Still In The Closet And For How Much Longer?

Peter Dreier, Occidental College In his 1990 autobiography, “Behind the Mask: My Double Life in Baseball,” Dave Pallone, a gay major league umpire who was quietly fired in 1988 after rumors about his sexual orientation circulated in the baseball world, contended that there were enough gay major league players to create an All-Star team. Since then, attitudes and laws about homosexuality have changed. High-profile figures in business, politics, show business, education, the media, the military and sports have come out of the closet. Athletes in three of the five major U.S. male team sports – the NBA, NFL and MLS – have come out while still playing, with NFL player Carl Nassib and NHL prospect Luke Prokop coming out in summer 2021. Meanwhile, according to OutSports magazine, at least 185 ...

To Catch Students Up After The Pandemic Intensive Tutoring, Longer School Days And Summer Sessions May Be Needed

Thomas Goldring, Georgia State University and Tim R. Sass, Georgia State University The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work. The big idea The COVID-19 pandemic has led to substantial reductions in student learning in metro-Atlanta public elementary and middle schools. What’s more, these impacts have grown over time, according to our new research. By winter of 2020-21, we found that average math achievement within a grade was up to seven months behind where students likely would have been had the pandemic not occurred. In reading, students were up to 7 ½ months behind on average in some grades. Students often fell further behind between the fall and winter tests, sometimes dramatically so. The effects of the pandemic varied by subject, grade and school district...

On An Airplane Why Does It Takes Longer To Fly From East To West

I am a retired United States Air Force pilot and flight instructor, and a few years ago I was sitting in the cockpit of a Boeing 747 airplane. I was 29,000 feet in the sky, flying from New Jersey to Sacramento, California, and then to Hawaii. The jet stream can have a big impact on how long a plane ride will last. Aeroprints via Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA     Why does it take longer to fly from east to west on an airplane? – Henry D, Age 7, Cambridge, Massachusetts It took six hours to fly and land the plane safely in Sacramento. After a few hours in California, I continued to Hawaii, which took almost another five hours of flying. That was 11 total hours of flying. After enjoying the sunshine in Hawaii, it was time to fly back to New Jersey. This trip went much faster...

Longer-Term Threat To Biden Presidency Armed Groups From Capitol Riot

Details continue to emerge about the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol incursion. Exactly what happened – including the degree of planning involved and rioters’ possible connections with Capitol police or even members of Congress – may not be known for some time. But there are looming threats of more possible violence, not just in Washington, D.C., but in all 50 state capitals. As a scholar of American militants, I see the groups behind the Jan. 6 events looking beyond Inauguration Day toward broader opposition to the Biden administration. Different groups, different goals Among the insurrectionists were members of various groups with a wide range of generally right-wing views, including neo-Nazis, Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, Three Percenters and militia members. There were also supporters of Donald Trum...

Suburbia Is No Longer All White President Trump — And Black Suburbanites Are More Politically Active Than Their Neighbors

President Donald Trump has tweeted up a storm about how his Democratic challenger Joe Biden wants to “abolish suburbs” and institute programs that would bring impoverished criminals into the suburbs, where they will destroy the “suburban lifestyle dream.” In the final stages of his campaign, Trump has made an explicit appeal to suburban women: “So can I ask you to do me a favor? Suburban women, will you please like me? I saved your damn neighborhood,” the president said at a rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in mid-October. I am a political scientist who studies race in America’s suburbs; my book “African Americans in White Suburbia: Social Networks and Political Behavior” was published in 2017. I contend that Trump’s tweets are not about the actual suburbs. Instead, they are meant to e...

Immigrants And U.S.-Born Hispanics Have Longer Life Expectancies Than Americans – Will The US Obesity Epidemic Change Things?

Anti-immigrant sentiments have fueled recent national and state-level health policy efforts. In 2019, Donald Trump signed a presidential proclamation that would deny visas to immigrants who could not provide proof of insurance. He argued that they would financially burden the health care system. More recently, Missouri’s August election ballot proposed Medicaid expansion, and opponents warned that it would overwhelm Missouri hospitals with undocumented immigrants, even though they are ineligible for Medicaid benefits. We study immigrant health and population health. Our work suggests that viewing immigrants as a drain on the U.S. health care system is largely unfounded. For decades, research has shown that immigrants tend to be healthier than U.S.-born whites. Immigrants outlive U.S.-born...

How Much Longer Will It Take, For You To Say, ENOUGH?

Although, it seems, Americans may have an incredible degree of patience, and tolerance, at some point, one would think, they would, eventually, have, ENOUGH, of what we've been witnessing, for the last few years! Since, it is the voters, who created the present situation, by electing the present occupant of the White House, as well as some, seemingly, self - serving, other public officials, only they, will be able to change this situation! The apparent, combination of apathy, laziness, and, far, less - than, stellar attention, as well as some amount of focusing on individual, self - interest, rather than the common good, appears to have created, this monster, which, if we don't handle, soon, will create, many undesirable ramifications, into the future! With that in mind, this article wi...
