With Empathy For Friends – Teens With Secure Family Relationships ‘Pay It Forward’

Jessica Stern, University of Virginia The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work. The big idea Teens with more secure family relationships get a head start on developing empathy, according to my colleagues’ and my new study tracking adolescents into adulthood. In contrast to popular myths about self-obsessed teens, existing research shows that adolescence is a key stage of development for the growth of empathy: the ability to stand in someone else’s shoes, to understand and resonate with their emotions and to care about their well-being. Empathy is a skill that develops over time, and it has major consequences for teens’ social interactions, friendships and adult relationships. So how do teens learn this critical skill? Our team’s new findings, published on July...

Once A Pipe Dream On Capitol Hill, Legalizing Marijuana Takes An Important Step Forward

In early December, the House of Representatives passed the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act, or the MORE Act. The bill sought to decriminalize marijuana nationally by removing cannabis from the federal government’s Schedule I controlled substance list. That category indicates the drug has high potential for abuse and no therapeutic value. It also includes drugs like methamphetamine and heroin. The bill is a long way from passage. With a new Congress just seated, it would need to be reintroduced and pass again in the House. Even if that happens, it is unlikely to get through the Senate. Still, the initial success of the MORE Act is an important sign that sentiment in Washington is changing, guided by increasing public backing for cannabis reform. Two-thirds of Ameri...

Biden’s Energy Plan Can Move The US Forward But Faces Headwinds

President-elect Joe Biden calls climate change an existential threat to America’s environment, health, national security and economy, and has promised a clean energy revolution to counter it. Biden has pledged that on his first day in office he will bring the U.S. back into the Paris Climate Agreement. He also is expected to restore numerous environmental protections that the Trump administration has weakened or revoked, and to cancel oil and gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In my view, not all of them are realistic. Yet their actual purpose may be as starting points for negotiation. Based on ...

A Researcher Reflects On Progress Fighting Hepatitis C – And A Path Forward

When I began my medical career in Hong Kong in the early 1980s, I chose to focus on hepatitis B, in part because it was very common and because the hepatitis C virus had not yet been discovered. I witnessed the devastation that this virus caused – cirrhosis, liver failure and liver cancer – and the lack of treatments we could offer to patients. Back then, scientists knew there was another type of hepatitis, but no one could identify it, so we called it non-A, non-B hepatitis. I would never have imagined that during the course of my career I would witness the discovery of what came to be known as hep C and the development of a cure for nearly all patients with chronic hepatitis C in 2014. Underscoring the importance of these discoveries for global human health, this year’s Nobel Prize in ...

4 games to look forward to this year

Every year video game publishers come together in Los Angeles for the biggest press event in the industry: the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3. Well, it’s supposed to be the biggest. This year Sony and its PlayStation decided to skip the show, and in general there were fewer exhibitors and fewer exciting announcements than in previous years. The 2019 showcase offered some exciting games, but with new consoles coming from PlayStation and Xbox next year, I got the sense that a lot of the more interesting titles were held back for the next generation of these platforms. There are still at least four titles coming out this year that I’m excited for, most of which gave a good show at E3. ‒ For me the next six months of gaming begin and end with fast-paced, exciting and very gory s...

Moving Forward While Remembering the Past and Embracing the Future

Moving Forward While Remembering the Past and Embracing the Future. I have realized that the best step to take when trying to move forward in life is to accept that sometimes we have to let go of the life we expected to have and to start living the life we are given. Looking back on our past is not always a bad thing. For me, taking an honest look at my past helps me understand more of who I want to see myself become in the future. I believe if I didn't remember past experiences during my life, I would not learn what truly were my mistakes and successes. I know that most of the time, I am my own worst critic and set unrealistic expectations for my life. But now that I understand this about myself, I can work on this aspect and continue to remember not to be so hard on myself. I have...

Help Stop Racial Profiling and Move America Forward Together

There are very many cases of racial profiling in this current era. However, not every individual is precise on the meaning of this highly sensitive term. Racial Profiling is the consideration of an individual's race when profiling any suspected criminal. In the United States of America, there are very many cases where people are grouped according to their country origins basing on neighborhoods too. As such, if there is a case of theft, people may have experienced some sort of criminal offense in their locality thereby causing the police to look in the given area where the people of similar origin live in. As Americans, we all need to help stop racial profiling and move America forward together. There are very many cases that have been happening recently which has led to some sort of divi...
