What Happens If Our Brain Needs Sleep, And We Don’t Get Enough

Many of us have experienced the effects of sleep deprivation: feeling tired and cranky, or finding it hard to concentrate. Sleep is more important for our brains than you may realize. Although it may appear you’re “switching off” when you fall asleep, the brain is far from inactive. What we know from studying patterns of brain electrical activity is that while you sleep, your brain cycles through two main types of patterns: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and slow-wave sleep. Slow-wave sleep, which occurs more at the beginning of the night, is characterized by slow rhythms of electrical activity across large numbers of brain cells (occurring one to four times per second). As the night progresses, we have more and more REM sleep. During REM sleep we often have vivid dreams, and our brains ...

‘Phubbing’ Your Loved Ones For Your Phone Can Do More Damage Than You Realise

It’s pretty normal to walk through a university campus and see students sitting together, yet ignoring each other for their smartphones – but not in Spain. I’m currently visiting the University of Navarra, where each time I pass the open space outside the Institute for Culture and Society, I see the vast majority of students talking to each other without their phones in hand. As Inés Olza, a linguist from the institute, explains: In Spain people like to talk. For them, a conversation is a cooperative process; silence makes them uncomfortable. This is great news for these students, because ignoring people in favour of a phone – an act known as “phubbing”, or phone snubbing – has dire consequences. Earlier this month I published a book called The Psychology of Phubbing. In it, I build on m...

So What Is A Divapreneur Anyway?

So what is a divapreneur? Now me being the prolific article writer that I am, I couldn't answer this question without writing an article about it. Sit back and become divafied! First of all Divapreneur is a combination of the words diva and entrepreneur. In order to define divapreneur we first need to define diva and entrepreneur. In order to do this I went to Wikipedia. This is what I found out from Wikipedia: Most widely used definition of diva A Diva was originally a distinguished female opera singer, but now usually refers to a popular female performer of non-operatic works. The term derives from an Italian word meaning "goddess", which, in turn derives from the feminine form of a Latin word divus, meaning, "divine one". This definition was found on the following page: http://en....

Very good dogs don’t necessarily make very good co-workers

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us are working from home in close proximity to our human children or fur babies. Cats have their fans, but I want to focus on dogs. Dogs are great companions. Science suggests owning one may benefit mental health. Just making eye contact with your dog can release the feel-good hormone oxytocin. But, as a researcher who studies emotions, procrastination and how people interact with pets, I can tell you that sometimes work emphasizes getting things done over feel-good chemicals. So what do we know about how this new-found time with your dog might be affecting your productivity? Good dog, bad dog There’s evidence that bringing your dog to work with you can reduce your perceived stress levels as the day progresses. And research on stress managemen...

Pants or no pants? Tips for virtual job interviews from home

If you have the good fortune of scoring a virtual job interview in the middle of a pandemic, the initial euphoria of potential employment may soon be replaced with anxiety over what to wear – as well as putting your home life on display for a potential employer. And with good reason. Social scientists have found that traditional interviews – without set questions or scoring metrics – are poor predictors of job performance. When this happens, interviewers make subjective judgments based on irrelevant information, like physical appearance and nonverbal cues. Illegal stereotypes based on gender and race may also be at play. And unfortunately, employment litigation has not succeeded in tamping down these practices. Although many companies were successfully sued in the early 2000s for making...

Yacht Parties Quickly Becoming The Highest Rated Social Event – According To Party Animals

Have you ever been to a yacht party? If you had, you'd have remembered it. At least that's what the latest polling data is showing for corporate event planners. Consider if you will, having a cocktail on a party yacht with people you know, like and work with - watching the Sun slowly set, looking out and seeing the islands and looking to the other side of the party yacht and seeing the shoreline in the distance. Just imagine that imprinting on your memory. This is something you will never forget, nor will anyone else on this short voyage either. Are sunsets really better when you are viewing them from a yacht? Yes, and a good captain knows how to maneuver his yacht just right, so you are watching the sunset over the islands and then sailing just past them as it sets. The pictures your gue...

Employees Want Better Pay, And Status

There has been endless chatter about the great work from trend. Resignation. Renegotiation. Reshuffle. Regardless of the descriptor used, employees in the United States are purportedly re-evaluating the role of work in their lives. While some of this is related to deeper existential questions — like “What am I doing with my life?” or “Is this really how I want to be spending most of my waking hours?” — there might be a much simpler and more practical explanation for the take-this-job-and-reinvent-it wave. A classic quote from the 1996 film Jerry Maguire captures it well. Sports agent Jerry Maguire (played by Tom Cruise) has been fired and as he embarks to become an independent agent he desperately tries to retain one of his clients, football star Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.). Tidwe...

If Only You Knew – How Rich Are The Rich?

“If poor people knew how rich rich people are, there would be riots in the streets.” Actor and comedian Chris Rock made this astute statement during a 2014 interview with New York magazine, referring to the yawning gap between rich and poor. In so doing, he stumbled upon a key challenge in the study of inequality. What’s the best way to measure it? Most inequality studies have focused on income – measures of which are widely available. However, being rich is not about a single year of earnings but rather about the accumulation of wealth over time. In the past, quantifying that has been tricky. The wealthy would probably prefer we stay in the dark about how rich they are, presumably to avoid the aforementioned riots. People like me who study the topic, however, are always looking for mor...
