E-Cigarettes Get FDA Approval: Essential Reads On The Harms And Benefits Of Vaping

Matt Williams, The Conversation After being on the U.S. market for around 15 years, an e-cigarette has, for the first time, been authorized for sale by the Food and Drug Administration. The government agency announced on Oct. 12, 2021, that three products from the vaping company Vuse had been given the green light to be marketed, along with one device in which the approved cartridges are placed. Although limited in scope – the authorization only relates to tobacco-flavored e-cigarettes and not the wider range of flavors that critics say are aimed at younger consumers – the move by the FDA is seen as a major development for the vaping industry. Many manufacturers of e-cigarettes are currently in a state of limbo, with their products still awaiting official authorization. The FDA said th...

Expect The Dollar To Fall If The US Defaults On Debt And With It, Americans’ Standard Of Living

Michael Humphries, Touro College Congress has seemingly kicked the debt ceiling deadline down the road – but the threat of a future default still exists. On Oct. 7, 2021, lawmakers in the Senate agreed to extend the government’s ability to borrow until December. It came after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell offered a temporary suspension to the debt limit, averting a default until at least December. But at that point, Democrats would have to find a way to raise the debt ceiling on their own – something they’ve said they won’t do. This isn’t the first time Republicans have resisted helping a Democratic president raise the debt ceiling. As an economist, I know that this political game of chicken has real-life consequences – even if it doesn’t end with default. In August 2011, duri...

Attack, Distract, Deny

Three Life Habits That Perpetuate Struggle, And The Solution That Transcends Them There are three common ways we tend to deal with difficulties in life: we may attack, or distract ourselves, or deny the reality of the situation. Attack is especially popular in modern society. We use attack as a form of defense. We may jump to our individual assumptions and interpretations of what has been said, and then take offense at what we interpret as a personal attack on us, our values or our truths. Instead of stepping back for objectivity, we launch into an attack of what we think happened or what we imagine the other saying. This hooks us into an endless cycle of conflict, both within and without. When some truth manages to penetrate our defenses, we may even deny the existence of actual eviden...

DESIGNER BABIES

THE TRENDS When human desires and wants are quantified as unalienable rights, then, ethics and morals become easily compromised, and a disaster often awaits. Designer babies will soon be the norm in reproductive healthcare, a reflection of desire passed off as an individual right. Soon, a couple will be able to walk in a reproductive healthcare facility and select all the features that they would prefer their child to have or not have. If permitted from clinical trials to practical applications, couples will have the freedom and right, depending on affordability, to decide the features that their child will have, in the process creating a child that they want. Therefore, based on their preference, a couple can decide to have a child with green eyes, less chances of becoming obese, hig...

A Model For His Billionaire Peers – Warren Buffett

John M. Longo, Rutgers University - Newark Warren Buffett, who turns 91 on Aug. 30, 2021, is a billionaire at a time when outrage over the excesses of extreme wealth is growing in tandem with billionaires’ fortunes. But based on what I learned about him while becoming a scholar of finance and a portfolio manager, I see Buffett as a model for his ultrarich peers. He has given half of his vast fortune to charity and plans to unload the most of the rest during his lifetime or upon his death. Buffett also largely lives a modest lifestyle by billionaire standards; he still resides in the spacious house he bought six decades ago. “My needs are simple,” he explained in June 2021. “What made me happy at 40 makes me happy at 90.” Nose for business The investor was born in 1930 as the Great D...

Andrew Cuomo And Activision Blizzard Sex Harassment Scandals – 5 #MeToo Takeaways

Elizabeth C. Tippett, University of Oregon Tarana Burke’s #MeToo movement has evolved in the four years since it exploded on the national scene with the Weinstein scandal. From a flurry of #MeToo-related headlines in 2017, the movement has now produced a broad array of legal reforms and changes to the way organizations respond to harassment allegations. Two recent high-profile examples – involving New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and video game maker Activision Blizzard – illustrate the power of these reforms. They also show how much employee culture has changed in the intervening years. As a workplace law scholar, I’ve been writing about the #MeToo movement for some time. Here are five takeaways I noticed from both the Cuomo investigation and the Activision Blizzard lawsuit. 1. Due process...

The Three Rules Of Life For Living Happily And Successfully

There are many problems and challenges we face in lives. From the moment we were born until the day we leave this world, we have to go through physical, emotional, mental and spiritual changes that define us as human beings. Regardless of our family backgrounds, we can and should find our purpose in life through our goals, dreams and aspirations. These are the pursuits that give meaning to our lives and make life worth living. This is destiny in the making. However, despite our best efforts, circumstances can derail our plans and make us move in a different direction from the one we have chosen. But we should not be sidetracked by obstacles along the way nor should we be discouraged by them. We need to build strength in all four dimensions of our beings- physic, mind, emotion and spi...

Feeling Worried, Unmotivated, The Pandemic Has Teens Disconnected From School

Leah M. Lessard, University of Connecticut When the COVID-19 pandemic started, many U.S. teens were more worried about the disruption to their education than the possibility of getting sick. A May 2020 survey of high school students found that they reported academics and work habits to be among their biggest challenges, ahead of mental and physical health. Nearly three-quarters (72%) indicated they were “very much” concerned with how COVID-19 would impact their school year. As a researcher who studies adolescent development, I was interested in whether and how teens’ school stress changed as the pandemic dragged on. So during the fall of 2020, my colleague and I surveyed adolescents about their academic concerns and the changes they noticed in school social dynamics. Our study, publishe...
