Has Our Pervasive Interest In Celebrity Videos and Gossip Undervalued Celebrity Culture?

I have varying views about the massive use of celebrity videos, gossip and rumours in today's society. I should start off by saying that I have nothing against the celebrity culture in the western world, I do believe the use of the word 'celebrity' and the connections with it have become undervalued over the years. When I was a kid, a celebrity was a title that was related to people who actually had some kind of distinct achievement, such as explorers, scientists and a select few musicians. In the year 2011 the term 'celebrity' almost had no value at all - like a devalued currency. These days it seems like anyone who vaguely comes close to a television camera is a celebrity. My feeling is that with the large volumes of celebrity videos, photographs and rumours about these p...

4 Films Explorer Humans Relationship With AI

4 films that show how humans can fortify – or botch – their relationship with AI. Artificial intelligence isn’t just a technical challenge. It’s a relationship challenge. Every time you give a task to AI, whether it’s approving a loan or driving a car, you’re shaping the relationship between humans and AI. These relationships aren’t always static. AI that begins as a simple tool can morph into something far more complicated: a challenger, a companion, a leader, a teammate or some combination thereof. Movies have long been a testing ground for imagining how these relationships might evolve. From 1980s sci-fi films to today’s blockbusters, filmmakers have wrestled with questions about what happens when humans rely on intelligent machines. These movies aren’t just entertainment; they’re ...

Punk Not Dead In Philly

How Philly anarcho-punks blended music, noise and social justice in the 1990s and 2000s While New York City is commonly considered the birthplace of American punk rock, just 100 miles south of the famous CBGB club where the Ramones and other early punk bands got their start is Philadelphia, which has had its own vibrant punk rock scene since at least 1974 – and it has persisted through the present day. I am a professor of sociology at Mercer County Community College in New Jersey, lead editor of a forthcoming edited volume titled “Being and Punk,” and author of the 2016 book “Ethics, Politics, and Anarcho-Punk Identifications: Punk and Anarchy in Philadelphia.” I’ve been a fan of punk rock music since I was 15 years old and have been an active member of punk scenes in Philadelphia and...

TikTok, in particular, rewards short, catchy hooks that can inspire dance challenges, comedy skits, or even absurd edits. Memes also give artists a direct connection to fans. They turn music into interactive content, allowing users to remix, lip-sync, or reinterpret songs in creative ways. The result? Tracks spread faster than any traditional radio campaign. But this viral power has a downside — the internet moves ...
