But mention Willie O’Ree – who broke the NHL’s color barrier – and you’ll likely receive a blank look. That may start to change. On Jan. 19, 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill awarding O'Ree a Congressional Gold Medal. A day earlier, the Boston Bruins retired O'Ree’s number 22 on the 64th anniversary of the night the forward from New Brunswick, Canada became the first Black person to play in a National Hockey League game.
