Why I Love Politics – My Wife Can’t Stand It!

Politics is dirty. Politics is filthy. Yes. Politics is ruthless and not for the faint hear-ted. It is a game that drains your heart of any grace and soul. It fills it instead with rage and unspeakable maladies. That is precisely the point. Calm and congenial fellows hardly vote - the angry and passionate do! People often wonder why anybody in their right mind ever wants to be in politics in the first place? I sometimes wonder about that too. In reality, dirty as it main seem, much good in history has been accomplished through politics. Think of the end of slavery in Europe and the America's. The workers rights and compensation in major world economies. The civil liberties or civil rights and the franchise it is in developed democracies across the globe. This is perhaps why despite the...

With New Controversial Cases That Stand To Change Many Americans’ Lives, The Supreme Court Is Back In Session – Here’s What To Expect

Following a dramatic year of controversial rulings, the Supreme Court began hearing new cases on Oct. 3, 2022, with a full agenda. The court overturned abortion rights and expanded gun rights in June 2022 as the new conservative supermajority began to exert its influence. Some of the court’s most important upcoming cases focus on the future of affirmative action, equal treatment of LGBTQ people, and the control of election laws. The court will hear the cases in the fall and then likely issue rulings in spring 2023. As a close observer of the court, I think this term’s rulings will continue to reject the court’s previous liberal decisions and instead reflect a conservative interpretation of the historical meaning of the Constitution. At least three of those upcoming rulings are likely to...

Universities Need To Stand Beside Black Professors, Not Condemn Them – To Foster Real Change

The past couple of weeks have seen wall to wall coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s death. Many media outlets took to eulogizing the Queen with effusive praise of her service and duty. But not everyone saw her and the institution she headed in the same light. Many took to social media to discuss the Queen’s role in Britain’s imperial project, which includes profiting from and remaining silent on the violence of British colonialism and slavery. Uju Anya, a Nigerian linguistics researcher at Carnegie Mellon University was only one of the public figures who expressed her lack of pity for the Queen’s passing. In a tweet, she wrote: “I heard the chief monarch of a thieving raping genocidal empire is finally dying. May her pain be excruciating.” In another tweet removed by Twitter, she also wrote: ...

How ‘Karen’ Went From A Popular Baby Name To A Stand-In For White Entitlement

When I read about Amy Cooper, the woman in Central Park who called the police on a black birder because he’d asked her to leash her out-of-control dog, I was horrified. But, as a sociolinguist who studies and writes about language and discrimination, I was also struck by the name given to Cooper in several headlines: “Central Park Karen.” On Twitter, the birder’s sister also referred to her as a “Karen.” There was no confusion about what this meant: It was a label for a white woman who had used her privilege to threaten and try to intimidate a black man by calling the police. But this was just one way “Karen” has been deployed in recent months. There was the woman dubbed a Karen who, after being told that a waiter would bring ketchup to her table, ended up helping herself at the server’...

Offering A Chance For Community To Stand In Solidarity And Support – Trans Day Of Visibility

Visibility within the transgender community is often a Catch-22, especially for trans people of color, or those living in rural, conservative areas. Hiding one’s identity can be a damaging experience and increase feelings of isolation, stigma and shame. But standing out as a trans person can make someone a target for discrimination or violence. As a trans man who studies transgender health and well-being, I believe Trans Day of Visibility – celebrated annually on March 31 – is an important day that allows community members to come together and find support and solidarity by knowing they are not alone. A celebration’s history Trans Day of Visibility acknowledges the contributions made by people within the transgender, nonbinary and gender-diverse communities (hereafter referred to as “tran...

The Real Reasons Beyonce Can’t Stand Kim Kardashian

They might run in similar circles, but Kim Kardashian and Beyonce are hardly best friends. Even though they're seen together occasionally, the friendship is reportedly pretty one-sided, with Kardashian allegedly bending over backwards to get into Queen B's good graces…and failing pretty miserably. Why aren't these superstars close? Let's find out...
