Abuse Is Baked Into American Sports – Nobody Said Anything For Fear Of Being Benched

As someone who has been researching, writing and teaching about women’s and girls sports for the past 15 years, I wasn’t surprised by the recent revelations of sexual and verbal abuse by National Women’s Soccer League coaches. There’s a tendency to explain such horrific behavior in strictly individualistic terms – as a sign of personality disorders or moral deficiencies. But this kind of response misses the larger picture of how organized sports itself contributes to abusive and even sadistic behavior. My book on the hypercommercialization of girls sports identified many instances of verbal and physical abuse of girls and young women at both the youth and college levels. More recently, some colleagues and I have been exploring the structural causes of college athlete stress and anxiety....

Serena Williams Forced Sports Journalists To Get Out Of The ‘Toy Box’ – And Cover Tennis As More Than A Game

Of the many outstanding components of her game, Serena Williams may best be known for her commanding serve. Those serves, unleashed over the course of a 27-year professional career, arguably heightened the power and intensity of the women’s game, forcing her opponents to game plan for each wicked volley. To those chronicling her exploits as one of the world’s best tennis players, Williams served up a different challenge. As a scholar of sports journalism, I have observed how its practitioners have struggled to find their footing when it comes to establishing consensus about what exactly constitutes good sports journalism. Williams’ presence as a Black woman in a historically white, patriarchal sport, her commitment to activism and her willingness to bare her personal challenges to the ...

Why Super-Rich US Sports Owner (Ted Lasso) Is Looking To Buy A London Soccer Team

Ted Lasso, the story of an American football coach bringing his unique management skills to a fictional soccer club in West London, has entertained TV viewers since 2020. It now appears that some investors stateside are looking to experience this close up by buying a real English Premier League club in West London: Chelsea FC. For the fictional Lasso, swap in the very real Ricketts family. The Chicago Cubs owners have joined up with hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin to bid for the club and have flown to London to meet with Chelsea stakeholders. Meanwhile, Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets and a former Ambassador to the U.K., also reportedly threw his hat into the ring. The fire sale of the club is part of the fallout from the unprovoked Russian invasion of Ukraine. The current ...

The Super Bowl And In All Other Sports The Risk Of Concussion Lurks

An estimated 90 million to 100 million Americans will tune in to watch the Super Bowl this Sunday. Unlikely to be mentioned during the festivities is this sobering but significant side note: Athletes participating in collision sports are among those at highest risk for concussion. That risk is not limited to professional football. Researchers estimate that 4 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur in the U.S. every year, across all sports and all levels of play and in both games and practices. They happen to athletes and kids playing basketball and soccer and weekend warriors who bicycle and ski. But thousands of concussions also result from car accidents, slips and trips or other blows to the head. I have been researching brain injuries for nearly a quarter-century. Acro...

5 Man Cave Ideas For The Non-Sports Fan

Everybody knows all about the quintessential sports themed Man Cave, and that's great, but if you aren't a sports fan, you should still be able to reap the benefits of having an all out awesome room dedicated to your passion, too! Below, you'll find five Man Cave ideas that have nothing to do with sports and everything to do with awesomeness. 1. For The Gamer For this idea, you'll want to have at least one (if not all) of the current generation gaming consoles, an HDTV, a surround sound speaker set up and either a dedicated ethernet hub near the consoles or a wi-fi connection for online fragging. Hanging posters of your favorite games on the walls is also a big plus. 2. For The Home Theater Fan The focal point of the home theater Man Cave is the television screen, so make sure you have a...

For LGBTQ Americans Sports Remain Hostile Territory

For all of the gains LGBTQ people have made over the past few decades, sports remain a highly visible reminder that homophobia and transphobia persist. CC BY-ND In recent years, more professional athletes, from U.S. women’s soccer team player Tierna Davidson to Olympic gymnast Danell Leyva, have come out of the closet. However, locker rooms remain less inclusive of LGBTQ people than places like schools or workplaces. And though many sports teams and figures have publicly campaigned against homophobia and transphobia, half of LGBTQ respondents in our recent study said that they’d experienced discrimination, insults, bullying or abuse while playing, watching or talking about sports. Mistreatment doesn’t discriminate by age For the study, we surveyed 4,000 U.S. adults and asked them whether t...

Sports Teams Are Being Eliminated By Colleges – And Runners And Golfers Are Paying More Of A Price Than Football Or Basketball Players

North Carolina Central University, a historically Black college, announced in February that its men’s baseball team – which formed in 1911 – would cease to exist after this season. The school’s athletic director called it “one of the most disappointing days in my career.” University leaders concluded that financial shortfalls due to COVID-19 were too much to support the team going forward. Since COVID-19 emerged, dozens of colleges and universities have announced the elimination of different intercollegiate athletics teams. The vast majority of these cuts are at schools and teams that never show up on ESPN’s SportsCenter. As professors who study higher education, we took a closer look at the 300 teams that were dropped between March and October 2020 by 78 colleges and universities. It’s...

Using Data In Sports For These Students, Is About More Than Winning Games

When professional sports teams use big data and analytics, their objective is to improve player performance and win more games. That approach is paying off in a major way. For instance, after the Golden State Warriors became one of the first NBA teams to invest in analytics, the team subsequently won league championships in 2015, 2017 and 2018. Analytics is the science of looking for patterns in data to make more informed decisions. The Warriors also get regular assists from partners in Silicon Valley – the famed tech hub near where the team is based. For that reason, it’s a small wonder why, in 2016, the Warriors were recognized at a sports analytics conference as the “Best Analytics Organization.” National Football League teams rely heavily on data as well. For instance, the Philadelp...

The Latest Battleground Over Transgender Rights – High School Sports

This year, 20 states proposed to ban transgender girls – meaning those assigned male at birth but who live and identify as girls – from competing on girls interscholastic sports teams. The only bill to pass was in Idaho. That law bars transgender athletes from participating in high school and college sports. It also authorizes “sex testing” of athletes through genital exams and genetic and hormone testing. The ACLU is challenging the law, arguing that it violates civil rights, and a federal court has delayed its implementation. On Dec. 21, over 60 women’s and LGBTQ rights groups and nearly 200 women athletes, including Billie Jean King, Megan Rapinoe and Candace Parker, filed legal briefs contesting the Idaho law and supporting the full inclusion of transgender athletes. The right of gi...

Sports Teams Sustainability Efforts, Does It Matter To Fans?

While the sport sector’s environmental impact is not fully understood, it has a social platform and reach to influence a significant number of people worldwide to choose more sustainable behaviors. Brian McCullough, associate professor of sport management at Texas A&M University, says that sport organizations should be proactive in becoming more sustainable to increase business performance, deepen connections with fans and attract new ones. Do fans care about sports teams’ sustainability efforts? How are sports being affected by climate change? And how might they be affected in the future? To use a sports analogy, there will be winners and losers as a result of climate change. Certain sports, like outdoor winter sports and even surfing, are vulnerable to the effects of climate change. ...
