An Epidemiologist Scoured The Latest Research And Has Some Answers To The Question – Do You Need A Second Booster Shot?

In late March 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized a second booster shot of COVID-19 vaccines for vulnerable populations in the U.S., a move that was soon after endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People ages 50 years and older and certain immunocompromised individuals who are at higher risk for severe disease, hospitalization and death are eligible four months after receiving the initial booster shot. A second booster shot is equivalent to a fourth dose for people who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna mRNA series or a third dose for those who received the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine. In Israel, people in these same vulnerable categories began receiving fourth doses in January 2022. The U.K. recently started administering a four...

A Significant Case Before The Supreme Court – The Second Amendment Could Topple Gun Restrictions

Eric Ruben, Southern Methodist University The stakes in one of the most significant Second Amendment cases in U.S. history are high. The Supreme Court’s ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, expected by mid-2022, could declare a New York state restriction on carrying concealed handguns in public places unconstitutional. Such a ruling in favor of the plaintiffs, which include a National Rifle Association affiliate, could loosen gun regulations in many parts of the country. In my view as a Second Amendment scholar, this case is also noteworthy in that how the court reaches its conclusion could affect the Second Amendment analysis of all weapons laws in the future. The court is set to hear oral arguments on Nov. 3. Long on the books In 1911, after an increase ...

A smart second skin gets all the power it needs from sweat

The big idea Skin is the largest organ of the human body. It conveys a lot of information, including temperature, pressure, pleasure and pain. Electronic skin (e-skin) mimics the properties of biological skin. Recently developed e-skins are capable of wirelessly monitoring physiological signals. They could play a crucial role in the next generation of robotics and medical devices. My lab at Caltech is interested in studying human biology and monitoring human health by using advanced bioelectronic devices. The e-skin we have developed not only analyzes the chemical and molecular composition of human sweat, it’s fully powered by chemicals in sweat. Why it matters Existing e-skins and wearable devices primarily focus on monitoring physiological parameters like heart rate and can’t assess hea...

Chloe Ayling to Testify in Second “Black Death Group” Kidnapping Case in Italy

Lawyers in Italy have called for Chloe Ayling, the victim of kidnappers who wanted to sell her on the darkweb, to testify against one of her suspected kidnappers at an upcoming hearing in Milan. The defendant’s legal team has pointed to several inaccuracies in the victim’s story and hopes that questioning her in court will help clear their client’s name. Ayling, 21, caught the media’s attention last year after she revealed that multiple men from a human trafficking group had kidnapped her in Milan, Italy, after luring her to Italy for a fake modeling gig. The human traffickers, she said, had called themselves the “Black Death Group”. According to statements she gave to the police after one week in captivity, the so-called “Black Death Group” had operatives spread across the globe who kidn...
