Kanye Aka Ye – Compares Reading Books To Eating Brussels Sprouts

Kanye may not like books, but hip-hop fosters a love of literature. When Ye – the artist formerly known as Kanye West – stated during a recent podcast that he doesn’t read books, some people questioned whether he was sending the wrong message to children. Those questions took on more importance in light of the fact that Ye recently launched Donda Academy, a private educational venture named after his late mother, Donda West, who was herself an English professor. As a rap artist, author and academic, I would never argue that reading lots of books is the only path to gaining knowledge or showing intelligence. After all, I created the first-ever peer-reviewed hip-hop album published by a university press. For my doctoral dissertation in 2017, I made a rap album and resisted any calls to su...

Remembering More By Reading – Especially Print – Than From Audio Or Video

During the pandemic, many college professors abandoned assignments from printed textbooks and turned instead to digital texts or multimedia coursework. As a professor of linguistics, I have been studying how electronic communication compares to traditional print when it comes to learning. Is comprehension the same whether a person reads a text onscreen or on paper? And are listening and viewing content as effective as reading the written word when covering the same material? The answers to both questions are often “no,” as I discuss in my book “How We Read Now,” released in March 2021. The reasons relate to a variety of factors, including diminished concentration, an entertainment mindset and a tendency to multitask while consuming digital content. Print versus digital reading When rea...

To Get Kids Moving, Reading And Talking Focus On Positive Goals – Not Spending So Much Time Staring At Screens

As vaccines become more available and life begins returning to so-called normal, caregivers and educators may have to contend with dramatically increased screen habits that kids developed during the pandemic. My research offers a positive – dare I say joyful – way to wean a child off of a screen habit. Instead of focusing on the excessive screen time, my approach focuses on the healthy activities that kids could be doing instead. Displaced activities Two theories explain the risks of excessive recreational screen time: the content theory and the displacement theory. The content theory – that what the children are watching or doing online is problematic – has received disproportionate attention. Most solutions that caregivers are familiar with, including co-viewing and being a media mento...

Today So Many 12th Graders Are Not Proficient In Reading And Math

Math and reading scores for 12th graders in the U.S. were at a historic low even before the COVID-19 pandemic forced a massive shift to remote learning, according to results of the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress released in late 2020. We asked three scholars to explain why so many high school seniors aren’t proficient in these critical subjects. Elizabeth Leyva, director of entry-level mathematics, Texas A&M University-San Antonio One might expect the jump from high school to college mathematics to be a natural progression, or a small step up in difficulty or expectations. But over time it has actually become a chasm, and that chasm continues to grow. More students are taking advanced coursework – algebra II or higher – in high school. But studying the material doesn...

People Magazine – The Average Person’s Reading on Celebrities Lifestyles

People magazine started back in 1974 as a spin-off from the page known back then as the 'People' page in Time magazine. A huge success, the magazine evolved and issued a Spanish version known as People en Espanol (1996) and Teen People (1998) only to embody the latter into the main magazine after 2006, because of low circulation and a decrease in advertising pages. The magazine introduced a separate issue called People Stylewatch, an extension to the original publications hugely popular Stylewatch column (2002); because of its success, the Stylewatch issue was circulating ten times a year after 2007. People magazine runs special issues; the 'fifty most beautiful' (now 100 most beautiful people) is a special annual issue the gives the award to one of the most beautiful men or women listed...
