FROM ELIN HILDERBRAND THIS HEARTWARMING NOVELLA IS AS REJUVENATING AS A GET-TOGETHER WITH OLD FRIENDS

BOOKS Elin Hilderbrand - "The Sixth Wedding" - A 28 Summers Story. A postscript to the #1 New York Times bestseller 28 Summers – Jake McCloud returns to Nantucket for Labor Day weekend 2023, this time without Mallory. This heartwarming novella from Elin Hilderbrand is as rejuvenating as a get-together with old friends. Set in Nantucket during Labor Day weekend in 2023, the story follows a group of longtime friends who are determined to tie up loose ends and work through the conflicts—romantic and otherwise—that have emerged throughout the years. Fans of Hilderbrand’s romantic drama 28 Summers will find the names and the setting familiar, but these characters are so compelling and well-drawn that you genuinely don’t need to have read the previous book to enjoy this standalone. Hilderbr...

With Empathy For Friends – Teens With Secure Family Relationships ‘Pay It Forward’

Jessica Stern, University of Virginia The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work. The big idea Teens with more secure family relationships get a head start on developing empathy, according to my colleagues’ and my new study tracking adolescents into adulthood. In contrast to popular myths about self-obsessed teens, existing research shows that adolescence is a key stage of development for the growth of empathy: the ability to stand in someone else’s shoes, to understand and resonate with their emotions and to care about their well-being. Empathy is a skill that develops over time, and it has major consequences for teens’ social interactions, friendships and adult relationships. So how do teens learn this critical skill? Our team’s new findings, published on July...

It’s Good For Kids To Have Friends From Different Socioeconomic Backgrounds – Here’s Why

Friendships that bridge across social class – “cross-class friendships” – can minimize middle school academic achievement differences that are based on the level of parents’ education, according to research from the UCLA School Diversity Project. As scholars of adolescent development, we examined academic achievement differences among 4,288 middle school students in California based on their parents’ education level. Seventeen percent of parents or guardians of students in our sample did not receive a high school diploma, 12% had a high school diploma or equivalent, 28% attended some college, 23% had a four-year college degree and 20% had a graduate degree. Students’ academic achievement was assessed using GPAs, scores from the state standardized test, and academic engagement as reporte...

More than 1 in 5 Americans are taking care of their elderly, ill and disabled relatives and friends

I’m studying how the COVID-19 pandemic is changing caregiving. Immunocompromised people, seniors with dementia and anyone with a chronic disease are more likely to experience the most severe COVID-19 symptoms. Caregivers face new worries due to the coronavirus, including whether they can they still assist their vulnerable relatives and friends and what they should do if they themselves or someone they live with gets sick. This quandary affects about 21.3% of Americans. The total number of Americans doing this unpaid work has reached an estimated 53 million in 2019, according to the latest data collected by the National Alliance for Caregiving, an advocacy and research organization, and AARP. That number, which excludes people caring for children without disabilities, is up from 43.5 mill...

Teen Likely Headed to Prison for Supplying Ecstasy to His Friends

At Plymouth Crown Court, a judge warned a teenager who had supplied his friends with MDMA that he would likely receive a prison sentence at a sentencing hearing in November. The teen had previously admitted purchasing MDMA from a dark web vendor and giving it to two of his friends. Both friends fatally overdosed on the MDMA later that day. Charlie Gregory, 19, recently admitted supplying two of his friends with MDMA he had purchased for £56 on the dark web. He pleaded guilty to one count of possession of MDMA and four counts of supplying MDMA at Plymouth Crown Court during an October 2018 hearing. The charges stemmed from an event that took place almost one year ago at a Basshunter concert at a Plymouth nightclub called Pryzm. In December 2017, Gregory and seven of his friends traveled fr...

Dear White People, You Need More Black Friends

Hey white people, you really need to step your game up and get some more black friends. And by friends, I mean someone who cares enough about you to call you on your shit and vice versa. The black person that you see at the gym sometimes or in a Starbucks line doesn’t count. Y’all ain’t friends, that’s an acquaintance — barely. Source: Dear White People, You Need More Black Friends
