Long-Distance Cross-Culture Relationships

Lindsey and Juo met while Lindsey was studying abroad at Ewah Woman's University in Seoul, South Korea back in 2015. She was there to study for a full year when out of nowhere Juo sent her a message on Instagram. Lindsey was hesitant at first but decided it would be a great way to make a friend in Korea. After a few times of casual friend dates, Juo asked Lindsey to be his girlfriend on his birthday in November or 2015. Since Lindsey returned to the US in June 2016, they have been in a long-distance relationship with Lindsey living in Florida and Juo living in South Korea. They get to see each other every 4 months for 2 months at a time. Giving their full effort in the relationship and using the distance to make their hearts grow fonder. Lindsey and Juo will both graduate from college this...

African Americans Have Long Celebrated Black Culture In Public Spaces Defying White Supremacy

From Richmond to New York City to Seattle, anti-racist activists are getting results as Confederate monuments are coming down by the dozens. In Richmond, Virginia, protesters have changed the story of Lee Circle, home to a 130-year-old monument to Confederate General Robert E. Lee. It’s now a new community space where graffiti, music and projected images turn the statue of Lee from a monument to white supremacy into a backdrop proclaiming that Black Lives Matter. This isn’t a new phenomenon. I’m a historian of celebrations and protests after the Civil War. And in my research, I have found that long before Confederate monuments occupied city squares, African Americans used those same public spaces to celebrate their history. But those African American memorial cultures have often been o...

The Selfie Culture

In the modern life, it is fashionable to name the latest trends and technologies with short and crisp words such as SciFi, HiFi and WiFi. The latest addition is the Selfie, which is a photograph of the self, taken by the photographer. It can be taken with a handheld digital camera or tablet or smartphone. Special sticks or stands to hold the smartphones are now available to facilitate better photos without the help of a third person. Selfies are often used for sharing on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. Most of the selfies are taken with a camera held at arm's length without a self-timer. In olden days, people used to photograph the self by uncovering the lens of the camera and running into the shot. Another method was to position the camera on a nearby object or on a ...

Are Dreadlocks Black Culture or a Unique Hairstyle For the Entire World?

Can anyone grow dreadlocks or just Black people? Black people's kinky hair leads many to believe they are the only race that grows dreadlocks. Therefore, it's a part of Black culture. But everywhere in the world, you can find people with all types of dreadlocks. Dreadlocks are the natural result of three to six months uncombed hair. Strains of hair intertwine together and create "ropes" or "locs". All types of hair eventually clunk or matte together if left free of combs and hair relaxers for a long time. The texture of the hair determines how long it takes. Thick coarse hair develops or grows dreadlocks fast, easy, and may not need chemicals or twisting. Thin straight hair will take longer. Also, it requires chemicals and twisting. Most Blacks' hair is coarse while other races have stra...

Dating in Black Culture

Dating in black culture used to start with meeting the girl, maybe in school or at the library. If you're older maybe you would meet someone at work or the grocery store. After that first meeting you would exchange phone numbers, talk on the phone a few times and set up that first date. You might go to the movies or a nice restaurant and you get to know the person you are dating. My how things have changed! Today first contacts are not happening in grocery stores but in chatrooms. Talking on the phone is replaced by text messages and emails. First dates and meetings are happening months later after spending lots of time getting to know each other often from great distances and also through the virtual world of the internet. Welcome to dating in the black culture, the 21st century edition....
