Unlikely To Work Anyway But Why Wall Street Investors’ Trading California Water Futures Is Nothing To Fear

Water is one of the world’s most vital resources. So is there reason to freak out now that profit-hungry hedge funds and other investors can trade it like a barrel of oil or shares of Apple? That’s exactly what CME Group recently did in California when it launched the world’s first futures market for water in December 2020. Put simply, a futures market lets people place bets on the future price of water. Some people worry Wall Street’s involvement in trading water will disenfranchise the water rights of rural communities and lead to more scarcity of an already dwindling resource, thus driving up the price everyone pays. As researchers who study commodity markets and the economics of water resources, we believe there are many benefits of a well-functioning water futures market, especial...

Uber And Lyft Drivers Are ‘Contractors’ California Voters Decide As Gig Workers Continue Search For A Livable Wage

Uber, TaskRabbit and other ride-hailing and delivery service companies in California can keep classifying their workers as independent contractors rather than employees after California voters approved a measure known as Proposition 22, according to the state’s still-unofficial tally. The fundamental question of whether Uber drivers and similar workers should be considered employees or contractors has been debated and litigated for years now. The issue is often framed, however inaccurately, as a tradeoff between the flexibility that comes with being independent against the higher incomes and benefits that employees tend to get. Uber and other supporters of Proposition 22 have argued the measure would provide both flexibility and some employeelike benefits, such as a guaranteed minimum wa...

It Will Take Time, A Broad Commitment, And Billions Of Dollars To Restore California’s Forests And Reduce Wildfire Risks

As California contends with its worst wildfire season in history, it’s more evident than ever that land management practices in the state’s forested mountains need major changes. Roger Bales, CC BY-ND Many of California’s 33 million acres of forests face widespread threats stemming from past management choices. Today the U.S. Forest Service estimates that of the 20 million acres it manages in California, 6-9 million acres need to be restored. Forest restoration basically means removing the less fire-resistant smaller trees and returning to a forest with larger trees that are widely spaced. These stewardship projects require partnerships across the many interests who benefit fro...

California school shooting leaves 2 dead, several injured

Police say the suspected gunman was taken into custody after opening fire at a high school in Southern California. A student gunman opened fire on Thursday at a Southern California high school, leaving two people dead and several others injured before he was taken into custody, authorities said. The shooting occurred about 7:30am at Saugus High School in the city of Santa Clarita, about 48km (30 miles) northwest of downtown Los Angeles. Freshman Rosie Rodriguez said she was walking up the library stairs when she heard noises that "sounded like balloons" popping. She realised they were gunshots when she saw other students running. Still carrying a backpack laden with books, she ran across the street to a home, where a person she did not know gave shelter to her an...

California cities try offer help for minority, low-income marijuana entrepreneurs

Reese Benton’s life has been shaped by the war on drugs. Her mother used crack and died of an overdose when Benton was 16. Her father sold drugs and is currently in prison, on year 20 of a 25-year sentence. “I was a statistic. I was not supposed to make it,” said Benton, 41, who is from San Francisco. But she did. Today, she is a successful hairdresser, styling some of the wealthiest people in the Bay Area. She is also an entrepreneur: Last year, she opened a delivery service for medical marijuana. And now that California legalized the drug for all adults over 21, Benton, who is black, is getting assistance from the city of San Francisco through a program designed to help people whose lives were affected by a crackdown on drugs that disproportionately affected minorities get into the l...
