The number of Americans who can’t get enough food is rising from already troubling levels during the COVID-19 pandemic. About 1 in 10 Americans said in November 2020 that their household sometimes or often did not have enough to eat in the previous week, the U.S. Census Bureau found. Food insecurity – what happens when someone doesn’t have enough money for food – is just as bad in Los Angeles County, home to one-quarter of California residents. These roughly 10 million people live primarily in urban areas like the cities of Los Angeles, Malibu, Hollywood and Compton. The Los Angeles crisis surged the most in April, when 26% of all households – and 39% of low-income households – experienced food insecurity that month. Two wildfires erupted on the outskirts of cities near Los Angeles, forcing more than 100,000 people to evacuate their homes Monday as powerful Santa Ana winds swept the flames through dry grasses and brush. With strong winds and extremely low humidity, large parts of California were under red flag warnings. High fire risk days have been common this year as the 2020 wildfire season shatters records across the West. More than 4 million acres have burned in California – 4% of the state’s land area and more than double the previous annual record. Five of the state’s six largest historical fires happened in 2020. Planned Parenthood’s new Wellbeing Centers in Los Angeles offer much-needed resources and care for teens and their parents. Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles recently announced plans to put 50 clinics inside LA County high schools. Called Wellbeing Centers, the facilities would provide not only physical health services but also mental health services and resources for students and parents. Two months after the announcement, Sue Walden, CEO and President of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, spoke to YES! about the five clinics that started the program, the progress so far, and their plans for expansion.
