Six Ways To Find A Date While Traveling This Summer

(BPT) - Travel is expected to be at an all-time high with vacations and weddings in full swing, which means the perfect opportunity for a summer romance in a new city or country. Dating apps like Bumble, the women-first dating and social networking app, can help you find new people you may be interested in – or at the very least, help you meet some new friends. Making new memories and enjoying yourself is just a bonus! “We’re excited to see all of the connections that will be made this summer, both abroad and at home, especially as we’re seeing a natural progression and eagerness for folks to meet in person again,” said Shan Boodram, Bumble’s Sex and Relationships Expert. “Though dating while traveling can just be a fun summer fling, we also found in a recent survey that more than one-thi...

Dating, Aging And The Gay Man

The gay scene in Toronto Canada is probably like that of many other large cities in that it suffers from ageism. It seems to be the place for the youth with little room for men in their 40's, 50's and beyond. The trouble is that there appears to be a large contingent of men in that age group. There also seems to be less and less ways to connect with other gay men of the same age. There are fewer bars and dance clubs for the gay man in general, and even fewer for the older gay man. But a lot of gay men don't want to go to a bar anyway. So where and how do they connect? For the sports oriented individual, at least in Toronto, there are gay leagues and teams for almost any sport from tennis to bowling. These are great - unless you are not a sports fan. Tech savvy men have the use of dating we...

Flirting 101 : 2 Techniques That Explain How To Flirt

Flirting actually is intuitive, but can be difficult to do if you have the wrong mindset and don't understand the technicalities behind it. Luckily because of the pickup community, it has been broken down to a science, so learning how to flirt will not be so difficult after all! In this article, if you are still confused on how to flirt, two specific flirting techniques will be discussed to help make flirting easier. They are Push/pull and a playfully challenging vibe. Firstly, when saying that flirting is intuitive, it actually is, as when we tend to be comfortable with someone and like someone, we tend to tease that person in a playful way, or Playfully challenge them. Think of a younger sibling or close friend. On numerous occasions, you may have poked fun at them and even challenged th...

The Dating Jungle: How Men And Women See Each Other When Online Dating

In the world of online dating, nothing is as it seems. But that doesn’t stop many of us from leaping to the wrong conclusions about people. A recent paper presented at the Annual Conference of the International Communication Association and reported on in the press suggested that when evaluating photographs from online dating profiles, men and women judge enhanced and un-enhanced photos somewhat differently. Enhanced photos, those in which a person has used makeup, hair styling, filters, or post-editing, were rated by both men and women as more being attractive. But while women also rated men in these photos as more trustworthy than in ordinary photos, the opposite was true of women: men rated women in enhanced photos as less trustworthy. One theory posits that “what is beautiful is good”,...

In Cape Town Tinder Use Reveals The Paradox Of Modern Dating

Dating apps are the new reality, but do they really make dating easier? My study suggests they complicate it further. Questions about trust and online dating regularly crop up along with headlines about unpleasant online approaches, scams and even physical assaults when dates move offline. Still, dating apps like Tinder remain hugely popular, downloaded and used mostly on cellphones to meet new people. In fact, they have received increasing traffic globally in recent years despite these bleak stories and spurred by COVID-induced lockdowns. My ethnographic research in Cape Town, South Africa, shows that Tinder dating is riddled with contradictory feelings. As an anthropology scholar who is curious about intimacy and apps, I followed the dating journeys of 25 Tinder users for two years. I so...

Just A Good Time Or A Long Time? Dogs In Dating Profile Photos Reveal Men’s Commitment Levels

Men and women who are seeking relationships online are asked to indicate what they want in a relationship, whether they are seeking “just friends,” “uncommitted relationships” or “long-term leading to marriage.” There’s an art to creating profiles, including uploading photographs to prompt a potential mate to indicate interest. People can describe themselves and their ideal relationship in a wide variety of ways, sometimes less than honestly, including exaggerating characteristics that they think are desirable. Most people do not dramatically lie, however. Instead, they use minor deceptions or small exaggerations. Altering photos by using filters is a common way to improve one’s portrayed physical appearance. However, online dating companies have been taking a hard stance and not permitt...

Is Love Losing Its Soul In The Digital Age?

Instagram users have taken to issuing “weekiversary posts,” where they diligently mark the duration of their romances. An article in The New York Times explained how weekiversary posts have the unintended – or very much intended – consequence of shaming people who are not in love. The article also noted that this phenomenon makes some doubt the intensity of their own relationship. They wonder why their partners are not similarly starry-eyed and gushing online. Some even admitted that this phenomenon prompted them to stay in relationships longer than they should have: they go on celebrating their weekiversaries, just to keep up appearances. In truth, this could apply to any of the social media platforms, where people increasingly feel the need to act their lives in real time in a public for...

A Trait Could Be Key To A Lasting Romance

Passion and commitment are widely believed to be the foundation of strong romantic relationships. But a relationship is made of two unique individuals, and personality traits these individuals possess or lack can often make a relationship more likely to endure. In a 2019 study, we found that one trait in particular – humility – is an important indicator of successful relationships. An honest view of shortcomings Humility can sometimes be confused with low self-esteem, low confidence or meekness. But researchers have come to realize that being humble generally indicates the presence of deeply admirable personal qualities. It means you have the ability to accurately assess your deficiencies without denying your skills and strengths. For example, you might recognize that you’re smart but rea...

People Post ‘Couple Photos’ As Their Social Media Profile Pictures – Why Is That?

As you scroll through your Facebook news feed, you see it: Your friend has posted a new profile picture. But instead of a picture of just your friend, it’s a couple photo – a picture of your friend and their romantic partner. “Why would someone choose that as their profile picture?” you wonder. We are social psychology researchers interested in understanding people’s behavior in close relationships and on social media. Our research and that of other scholars provides insight into why people use these types of “I’m part of a couple!” displays on social media. Choosing profile photos that include their romantic partner, posting their relationship status and mentioning their partner in their updates can all be signs of how people feel in their relationship – and may send an important message ...
