College Women Embracing More Diverse Sexuality -The Feminism’s Legacy

Most adults identify themselves as heterosexual, meaning they report being attracted to, and engaging in sex with, only members of the other sex. However, women ages 18 to 29 are increasingly rejecting exclusive heterosexuality and describing their sexual orientation in other ways. These changes in women’s sexuality are not mirrored by their male peers. That’s the primary finding in our most recent report on nine years of surveys at the Binghamton Human Sexualities Research Lab, just published in “Sexuality in Emerging Adulthood.” Together with our Binghamton University colleagues Richard E. Mattson, Melissa Hardesty, Ann Merriwether and Maggie M. Parker, we conclude that changes in young adults’ sexual orientation are not just as a result of increased social acceptance of LGBT people – b...

After Infidelity-Stay Or Go?

When you get the devastating news that your spouse has had an affair, how do you decide whether to stay or go? Because you feel betrayed, your first impulse is usually anger, and wanting to leave-fight or flight. But, after you calm down, you realize there's a lot you'll lose, and you may have children to consider. Don't make an instant decision you may regret later, after the damage is done. It's possible to find an extraordinary love after divorcing late in life, but most of my clients report the potential partners out there are no better than the ones they left. While I don't think you should stay and suffer if nothing's working, in my practice I see many couples who do the work and wind up happier than before. The affair may have happened after long-standing problems in the marriage, w...

Do Fairy Tales Exists?

Love at first sight. They see each other from across the room. Their eyes lock. Every other person fades out. The music starts. He walks over to her and it's just as if they've know each other their entire lives. They kiss. They marry. And 2.5 kids later and a black lab, they live happily ever after. After all. It is a fairy tale. I do a fair amount of relationship work with my clients. And it is no surprise that I hear the same complaints over and over again from both men and women. It is almost like both have forgotten that relationships take work. I had one women with whom I have worked with over the course of the years tell me that monogamy is a thing of the past. For some yes. For many, no. When we reviewed her dating history, all of her relationships ended in infidelity, or simply sh...

Youth: A Critical Stage In Life

I enjoy writing to young people like myself not because our old folks know better and do not need the information (which of course they do, and in fact should read it), but because a youthful psyche is one which is easily and readily flexible to both the positive influence (principles, knowledge, truths) about life or the negative appeals in our society. The youthful life is the period where characters are materialized, values are developed and choices are made. The choices and decisions that would transform our lives and even forthcoming generations, in spite of our present dilemma, will be taken during this phase of life. Steven Covey, who was an author and great teacher wrote, "I am not a product of my circumstance. I am a product of my decisions." Hence, the need for enlightenment and...

By Conquering Their Own Fears, Following Their Child’s Lead And Tolerating Ambiguity – Parents Can Support A Child Who Comes Out As Trans

Young transgender, or trans, people face high rates of anxiety, depression and suicide. These elevated mental health risks largely stem from external factors such as discrimination, victimization and – most especially – family rejection rather than from being trans. Em Matsuno, a research fellow at Palo Alto University, is currently developing and testing an online training program called the Parent Support Program to help parents better understand and support trans youth. They talked with The Conversation U.S. about their findings and how parents can be better advocates – and avoid common missteps – when a child identifies as trans or nonbinary. What are common challenges parents with trans kids face? A big one is fear. Parents fear for their child’s safety. For example, they fear their ...

Do You Think That’s Funny?

We all enjoy a good laugh on occasion, and indeed humour can be a very effective way of easing areas of tension or breaking the ice in a new relationship. But one thing to remember when using humour is that we each have our own distinctive preferences in the things that we find funny and different tastes regarding what we enjoy. Some may like slapstick, sketches, joke telling, others may prefer a more subtle, observational style. Laughter has been found to improve our overall health, boost our immune system and reduce both our stress levels and blood pressure. It releases endorphins, the feel good, happy chemicals in the brain which are released whenever we exercise, laugh and feel upbeat. Laughing for 10-15 minutes has even been found to burn off up to 40 calories! So, if you're struggli...

The Dating App Trap

There's a certain dating website that shall remain nameless. In all its ads, it sells itself as a means of finding your soulmate. Ahh, true love... Except... Well, it's obviously a site for hooking up. How do I know? You can tell the intention behind something not in its marketing but how it's designed. In this case, the website let you filter matches by all sorts of things - gender, location, age, salary, education... All useful stuff for finding a partner. But also not only height but hair colour and eye colour. Only the most vapid, shallow and deluded folks say their soulmate has to have hazel eyes. For a night of cheap, harmless fun though? Well, that makes a bit more sense. This trap can show up in your affirmations too. When you say you want to find 'love' or 'wealth', wh...
