Danny Glover on New Film “Sorry to Bother You” and the Myth of Postracial America

What the actor wants that “White voice” to tell us and how we’ve gotten the American Dream so wrong. Boots Riley’s debut film, Sorry to Bother You, offers a renewed sense of urgency in how we respond to the racist and capitalist divides that impact us all. Satirical, dystopian, part sci-fi. Emotionally and intellectually, it’s everything we didn’t know we needed. Cassius “Cash” Green represents many unemployed young Black males looking for work and their subsequent climb to the top after they finally land a job. After getting a low-level telemarketing position, Cash learns the secret to how many people of color get ahead—assimilation. His “White voice” talent propels him to success, and after being struck in the head by a soda can thrown by a protestor, he eventually becomes a viral ...

Emilia Clarke Talks About Doing Nude Scenes

Emilia Clarke has been pretty vocal about her nude scenes in Game of Thrones. But she's also been relatively flip-floppy on her stance on them. After Season 4 of Game of Thrones, Clarke vowed to never do a nude scene for the show again. She told interviewers in 2015 that "sex scenes should be more subtle," saying  that she'd be participating in fewer of them in upcoming seasons of the show. "I'm British, so I cringe at that sort of thing anyway. I can't stand it," she added. Clarke clarified her statements later, claiming they were taken out of context. "Sometimes explicit scenes are required and make sense for the characters/story, as they do in Westeros. If it’s gratuitous for gratuitous sake, then I will discuss with a director on how to make it more subtle," she said.  Clarke recentl...

Pacific Rim: Uprising’ is an assault on the senses

Call the prosecutor! I want to charge the people behind the deafening man vs. machine actioner “Pacific Rim: Uprising” with assault and battery — on my senses. That includes my nose, which was offended by the odious odor emanating from this inferior sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s original. In the hands of director and co-writer Stephen S. DeKnight — and three more scribes — the insipid “Uprising” does nothing but pander to its Asian overseas markets with cool characters who speak Mandarin and to 11-year-old gamers with cool mechs sporting even cooler names like Gipsy Avenger, Saber Athena, Bracer Phoenix, Obsidian Fury and Guardian Bravo. Not even the charismatic duo of John Boyega (“Star Wars”) and Scott Eastwood (son of Clint) can save this hunk of molten metal from turning to slag. It...

Spielberg scores a lot of points with ‘Ready Player One’

Before making “Ready Player One,” Steven Spielberg had directed 30 feature films. There were ticket-selling triumphs (“Jaws”) and box office bombs (“The BFG”). There were somber studies of social issues (“The Color Purple”), haunting historical dramas (“Schindler’s List”), and science fiction flights of fancy (“A.I. Artificial Intelligence”). But it’s been a long time since Spielberg successfully latched on to the little kid inside of him and made a film that’s simply a bunch of fun, I’d say since “1941.” From its opening salvo of music — Van Halen’s “Jump” — to its last — “You Make My Dreams” by Hall & Oates — “Ready Player One” is a whirlwind celebration of fantasy versus reality and good versus evil, a salute to competitive spirit, youthful idealism, and pop culture. It’s also the ...

These Far-Out Fanny Scenes Will Always Be Timeless

The 70s were full of free love, and we love these bodacious booty clips from Pam Grier, Linnea Quigley, Goldie Hawn, Nastassja Kinski, and Bo Derek. Thanks to the magic of the Internet, we can watch them anytime we want. They may be vintage now, but these far-out fanny scenes will always be timeless.
