Where Racial Disparities Are Shrinking Fast … In Prisons

A big decrease in the incarceration rate of Black adults may lead to parity in the near future. Stop Shrinking To Fit Places You’ve Outgrown

Stop shrinking to fit places you've outgrown. That saying is more pertinent today than ever before. Have you ever seen a cat curl up in the bathroom sink? It's such a cool and comfortable place for them to go. What if a giant Great Dane puppy was trying to fit into the bathroom sink? That suggestion doesn't seem like a very comfortable fit. Could that be you in your preparation to go back to work after the lockdown? If you have found yourself without a job during the pandemic and are dreading going back to the place that paid the bills but you didn't necessarily enjoy, now is the time to search for a place where you naturally fit in perfectly. Ask yourself what you enjoy or what you have spent time doing during the lockdown that might pay the bills because at this time there are worker...

A Small And Shrinking Number Of The World’s Computer Chips Are Made In The US – A Global Semiconductor Shortage Highlights A Troubling Trend

President Joe Biden’s executive order calling for a review of supply chains for critical products put a spotlight on the decades-long decline in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing capacity. Semiconductors are the logic and memory chips used in computers, phones, vehicles and appliances. The U.S. share of global semiconductor fabrication is only 12%, down from 37% in 1990, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association.   CC BY-ND It might not seem important that 88% of the semiconductor chips used by U.S. industries, including the automotive and defense industries, are fabricated outside the U.S. However, three issues make where they are made critical to the U.S. as the global leader in electronics: lower capability, high global demand and limited investment. Lower capability The ...

Shrinking Glaciers Consistent Ice Loss For The Foreseeable Future A New Normal For Greenland’s Ice Sheet

Greenland is the largest island on Earth, and about 80% of it is covered by a giant sheet of ice. Slowly flowing glaciers connect this massive frozen reservoir of fresh water to the ocean, but because of climate change, these glaciers are rapidly retreating. As Greenland’s glaciers retreat, they are losing ice at a faster and faster rate. Michalea King, CC BY-ND I’m an earth scientist who studies how changes to Greenland’s glaciers affect the stability of the ice sheet as a whole. Healthy glaciers are stable in size and shape and act as drains for the ice sheet, transporting ice into the sea. They maintain a balance where the ice added each year roughly equals the ice lost to the sea. But because of warming caused by climate change, that dynamic has changed. For years, scientists have w...
